Do ChatGPT and Google AI Mode respond similarly or differently when given prompts related to different industries?

To find out, researchers at Brightedge conducted a study in July 2025 in which they gave both tools thousands of real-world queries across four industries: finance, healthcare, B2B technology, and education.

The researchers found that when the tools were given prompts related to comparing options, their responses were often similar.

However, when the tools were given prompts related to taking action, their responses often differed. That was especially true for prompts related to healthcare, B2B tech, and education.

Specifically, when prompts were related to action, ChatGPT often acted like a "trusted coach" and surfaced products, apps, and task-based tools, whereas Google AI Mode often served as a "research assistant" and surfaced guides, articles, and institutional content.

For example, when prompted with "What are some resources to help plan for retirement?” ChatGPT offered tools and calculators, whereas Google AI Mode selected topics to research.

About the research: The report was based on data from a study conducted in July 2025 in which researchers gave ChatGPT and Google AI Mode thousands of real-world queries across four industries: finance, healthcare, B2B technology, and education.
