Catchy Name Needed For Web Design Business

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
We are in the process of starting a home based web design business. I had a name chosen however it began with the letter " z". Im thinking now.. it will be the last of all lists, ie yellow pages, directories etc. Hoping for find a name that will be more towards the top of any advertising lists. I know I never make it to Z when im searching the yellow pages for a specific service. thanks so much

Actually, when people search in the directories its either they start in A and jump to last so it doesnt matter if your companys name starts with "z".....the main thing to remember is how would the people have the retention of the companys name at once.... so make it easy.

Sounds like you're making an assumption that people will only be looking for you via Yellow and other directories. If that's the case, you'll be waiting a long time for the phone to ring.

I suggest you look at what the business is, your USPs, and how you want to be perceived by clients, rather than simply focusing on the alphabetic ranking of the name.

It's never bothered Google, Microsoft, Sony or Xerox that their names aren't at the front of the book.

And in any case, even if you pick an "A" name, big companies can still get ahead of you in directories by purchasing premium listings you may not be able to afford yet.

If there's a good, strong story behind your "Z" name, stick with it, and instead of worrying if you're in the front or back of your section in a directory that hasn't even been printed yet, think hard about your business promotional campaign to bring the customers in the door.

*Hint* - You may need to go out and find customers, rather than wait for them to find you.

    Hope that helps.

As ChrisB said you will wait a long time for anyone to call you from the yellow pages. Pick your name because it is descriptive of what you do or because it is memorable. But in the end it is the work you do and how much you are able to get the message out to your own network of family, friends and associates that will bring you work.
