What Domain Suffix Should I Choose?

Posted by Anonymous on 50 Points
Hi,

I need your help again. What domain suffix should I choose for my real estate website targeting the US audience?

I'm balancing between:

.us
.ws
.by

Why .us - I'm considering it since I'm aiming at a US audience.

Why .ws - short for website, I thought it's a good idea, but would like to know what you think about it

Why .by - I'm going to use the preposition"by" in the domain name and thought it's a good idea to have it end in .by)

Why not .com: there are no good domains left ending in .com as most businesses want a .com name..

When you choose a suffix for your domain, you are determining a large portion of your corporate image...That's why I'm so serious about this question.

Thanks in advance.

.com is still the suffix you should use. Try adding something to your name to make it work. ???online.com or ???Chicago.com or something else. i ahve had good experinec getting shop????.com fro ecommerce.

Try harder to get the .com. You will be much happier.

I would disagree with opinions above.
Most important things you should consider is that you domain name is short, easy to remember and, in the best case, be your company's name.
It will take you much longer to promote something like MyRealEstateCompany.com then RealEstate.by.

And trust me, people who use internet know about problem with domain names, therefore they will not get suspicious of your business.

The only reason I see for you not to do it - if your business targets us audience only.
You actually benefit from having a local domain because the people in your country know that they're dealing with a local entity, which is what they want. After all, if they stay in (say) the United Kingdom, they're not likely to want to try to order pizza from pizzaparlour.com, which suggests a US or an international site.

    Hope that helps

I have about 5 or 6 domains, and my primary domain is a .biz domain - but that was a mistake, all my new domains are .com domains. I agree with the above - look harder for a .com domain.

By the way, is there anything unusual or special or unique about your site or services which might help us suggest a name ?

2 telemoxie: quote[is there anything unusual or special or unique about your site or services which might help us suggest a name?]

This is going to be a for sale by owner (FSBO) website.
Home sellers will register there and list their homes for sale on our site without dealing with a real estate agent. Buyers will be able to find a home by searching our FSBO database. We aim at creating a market place where sellers and buyers will meet directly.

Your comments persuaded me to look harder and find something "in the dot com camp" (BARQ!)

....and BINGOooo! I found it! :)

    you guys are great!

I'm going to buy all possible suffixes which go with this domain name. As soon as I'm done, I will post my newly coined domain name for your approval

2 fishka: unfortunately, dot coms are like comfy old shoes, we got used to them and try to use them whenever possible. But I strongly agree with you that a shorter and easier to remember domain, even with a less commonly used suffix, is worth buying instead of a long and awkward dot com.

    Thanks to all for participation.

oh, okey, will do that - just .com, .net and .org. Quite enough to conquer the FSBO market... :)

You are very helpful, Vevolution :)
