Our Mission....is?

Posted by Anonymous on 350 Points
Good Morning, this is my 3rd or 4th post and I've been very happy with the responses I've received. I'm currently trying to write my mission statement and can't seem to word it quite right. My company is Cobblestone Streets, my website is under construction but you can check the splash page at www.cobblestonestreets.net if you like. I want it to encompass integrity, honesty, morality, knowledge, personal, passion, etc. My name was taken from the old streets of the city that have lasting appeal and history....If it can tie in it would be great....

I think you have to look inward to do your mission statement. It isn't something that we can write for you without sitting down and talking about what the driving forces are in your life. Covey says, "Writing your mission in terms of the important roles in your life gives you balance and harmony. It keeps each role clearly before you.You can review your roles frequently to make sure that you don't get totally absorbed by one role to the exclusion of others that are equally or even more important in your life."

If we are talking about a mission statement for your business - if you are not a sole proprietor, you should involve your team as well. We used to say, "if they write them, they'll underwrite them." You can have the best mission, vision statements in the world, but they're worthless if the staff doesn't buy in.

Sorry to be kind of negative, but I am not comfortable "writing" your statement.

    Good Luck!

I'm not a big fan of mission statements. They tend to sound alike and speak in very general platitudes.

I prefer a "positioning statement" because when done correctly it comes from the marketplace (the target) and is truly relevant to the clstomers pov.

    Hi,

I'd suggest that you first relax and pen down what exactly your company will stand for in the long run- coz a mission statement comes from a mission. SO try to convince yourself first about what do you want to achieve or rather become more than 10 years down the line.

It's a good thing that you've penned down such words as integrity, honesty, morality etc. Now put these into proper logical statements, prioritize basis if the statement is strong enough for a long term mission, get rid of the remaining ones, connect those prioritized statements and then try to narrow down to what it really means.

Remember: The mission statement is not just guiding you or your stakeholders but is also a part of the corporate identity- So, it'd be best if you take the pains and pen it down yourself.

    All the Best!!

Consider why you're writing it at all. Is this for you, for your website, your employees, or your (potential) investors? Ideally, make your mission statement measurable, otherwise how will you measure your "integrity, honesty, morality, knowledge, personal, passion, etc.".
