Can I Have 2 Company Names Under 1 Business Name?

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
Hello,

Well since I am still having difficulty trying to come up with a name for my event planning business, I am wondering if the problem is that I'm looking for a name that needs to cover too much of what I want my business to do. So, now I'm wondering if I am able to have 1 main umbrella company name ie "do business as" name but have a different name within that same umbrella name for the other side of my business. Does this make sense? And does this mean I would need to form 2 separate LLC's & would it be treated as a completely separate, second business?

Thanks young707. This makes sense but I'm afraid I still need some further clarification. I'm not new to the event planning industry but I'm definitely new to starting a business. How do I make the second company a subsidiary to the first? And by doing this, what you're saying is, my ins, tax ID, LLC etc will cover both companies?

And how is it obvious to others that this Y company is a subsidiary to X? Do I state that in the title?

Also, does there have to be some similarities to both companies names? ie. If my first company is named Raquel Event Planning does my other company have to be Raquel Event Planning for XYZ? Or can both names be completely different?

Thanks! I never considered doing this but it may make a world of a difference for me!

How big to you expect the businesses to be? Do you have a whole lot of liability?

You can work both of these under the Doing Business As... DBA plan.

You file a single tax return. But channel the money into two seperate bank accounts. Thats the simplest way to do it. Your clients make checks to what ever business. If they need to file a form 1099 you just use your social security number.

Thanks young707. This is all good information & good timing. Just last night I was considering incorporating. I didn't realize that the state required a business tax whether you make money or not. That's tough! And I do see your point in starting out just a DBA, but I've decided I am going to form an LLC. Inc is just too big for me right now & LLC gives me the protection I'm looking for. I am new to starting a business but not to the industry. I already have clients lined up so I think it's better to just go through with forming the LLC right off the bat. Appreciate all the advice!
