Starting My Own Marketing Bus, Need A Name

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am going out of my mind trying to think of a name for a marketing company that hasn't been done already. I know, its a sad way to start. But basically, I'll be catering to specialty automotive parts manufacturers, especially those tailored to street rodders, or off-road, race, etc. I want to work mostly with smaller businesses that are new to the industry I have been in for 15 years. I want something memorable and not too stuffy, but still professional. Please help me gain my sanity back!

You'll be alright. We all feel crazy at times -- if it's 'all' the time, then you may need professional help! '-)

    Couple of thoughts.

If you've been in the industry for 15 years, your name may have some attraction for your target audience. For example, if Michael Gerber, founder of E-Myth Worldwide were to do something else but targeted to his current marketplace, then using his name in the name of the new venture might be a strategically good idea.

If your name isn't all that well known or regarded, then use a name to convey either a niche specialty or a niche benefit you want to be known for delivering or a service your market readily understands and desires. For example, you reference street rodders, racers, serious hobbyists, etc. So maybe something like 'After Market Marketing" or "Off Road Marketing" begins to both communicate that you specialize in a specific group ("Hey, this firm's talking about me!") or, in the kind of services or benefits you offer ("Now THAT's what I'm talking about!"). For example, my own firm is called "SellMore Marketing". (Well now, you wouldn't want to sell LESS, would you?). My point is that it grabs attention with our prospects and is a great conversation starter with the small to mid-size company owner I want to engage.

Hope that's of some help . . . so think:

    1) niche/s you want to serve / attract,

    2) The #1 benefit you offer, and / or

    3) services your market wants

Best of luck . . . I'm sure you'll get it figured out!

But I would reconsider working with new business owners unless you like being poor. I love working with them for so many reasons, but my ideal clients are not them.

The newbies are the ones I work with at discounted rates most of the time.

    I strongly disagree.

Why should you pick a company name which limits your options?

Most likely you will spend lots of money to create letterhead and business cards and websites only to find opportunities in a new direction.

Much of your business will come through networking.

Many folks you meet will decide to do business with you based on your professionalism and personality rather than your company name. Why walk away from all that business?

If you feel you must have a specific brand, develop and brand an offering targeted to your target market. Choose a more generic company name. For example, the company General Mills has a brand called HoneyNut Cheerios. This way they don't limit themselves to producing a single kind of cereal.

Someday you may meet an executive from a Fortune 500 company who wants you to do a marketing campaign, and you would not want an overly specific company name and business card to cost you a major opportunity.
