"hi, My Name Is James, I'm An Insurance Agent" No!

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi guys and girls
The situation is I'm going to be an insurance agent soon. However, people are scared of insurance agent. As soon as we say the word "insurance", they run away.

Can we say "I am an insurance agent" in a better way?
I came up with "I help people protect their family financially". It's not good enough.

Any help is appreciated
Thanks in advanced

Here's a strange point: People hate insurance agents in general but love their own insurance agent. I don't know that you can transform yourself into a "risk assessor" without alienating people when you finally get around to your product. I have seen people try it, with insurance, multi-level marketing, and other services. And, it ends with them looking like they lack integrety.

I suggest you work hard to build some active references, some sources of referal and some third party folks willing to say... Let me introduce you to James, he's the only insurance agent in the world I trust."

You can also play at your discomfort, and say, "I hate saying I'm an insurance agent". That will elicit the natural question, "Why?", and you call tell them that most people run away as soon as you tell them, but you love helping families protect their future...

@PhilGrisoliaMarketing, "I provide financial protection for families." does sound better, thanks for the advice. BTW, I'm living in US, financial crisis here is not as bad as in states.

@D4Demand, yes you are right, insurance agent = telemarketer lol
Thank you for the secret, it is a good one. I'm thinking what if we are helping at church but people not asking wat we do for living??
Due to the limit number of people we meet face to face, just like you said, it's gonna take around 1 yr to make it work.

I think people do feel like they are always trying to be upsold by insurance agents and always being asked to switch. It does seem to be a pretty cut-throat business.

I guess what you need to think about is how to get your message out to people that need new insurance. As many people I use my agent for most of my needs. Once I was in with him, I call him as my needs change. The trick is to get that first policy. I do't know that a saying is the trick for that.

Think of when people would need their first policy. There first car, first house, just got married, etc. Think about ways to indentify these people. These people will not be feeling like they are being ambushed as they really have a need for insurance. They may view it as a blessing that you contacted them. The hard part is to identify these people before the purchase as they will probably need insurance to close the deal. This may take networking with providers in some of these areas.

    Hope this helps,

    Mike

I advise people on their insurance - you know, help them get the best deal, check they are covered for those just-in-case moments. You'd be amazed how poorly protected some people are. I ran into this guy, great big car and do you know he wasn't even protected for ...

    etc etc.

Insurance booms in bad times. That was the heading for an article in an Australian newspaper today. The article went on to say that similar boom times for insurance dated back to 1890's as well as both world wars and two recessions Australia has experienced.

They also said that this is a time when the consumer understands something can go wrong and their has been an increase of up to 40 per cent in new income protection and home and content policies.

Let me know if you want me to scan and email the article to you.

The reason people like their own agent is because they know them. You have to be known. That is where your networking will come in handy. Join groups, volunteer, get out and be seen. Once people know you and see that you are someone who can be trusted, your business will grow.
