Help Me Name My Jewelry

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I make hand-knotted and hand-tied jewelry out of my home and would like some help finding a catchy name for my jewelry line. I need to have some business cards made up for when I have home parties, etc. My jewelry is all made using thread (no wire) which gives it a very "earthy" feel. I also incorporate vintage pieces as pendants and vintage buttons for the closure. What I have been calling myself or maybe using as a slogan is "beads to live in" as they seem to go with everything. Is that too long for a name, however? Does anyone out there have a suggestion? I thought of Heartstrings or Y-Knot? Does it matter if someone else has this name but it is a different type of company? Right now, I am just a crafter and not a bonified business, but I am becoming popular in my city. Thanks!! Pam

Pam, in your situation I would recommend just picking a name you like and using it. Trying to approach this from a formal business planning perspective would be overkill for your needs. The name isn't the most important factor in selling your jewelry, and it won't be unless/until you scale up and decide you want it to be a big business ... which probably won't ever make good business sense for this craft-type enterprise.

Any of the names you mention would work. If you want to have some measure of protection, you can register a "fictitious business name" at your local town hall ... that's a d/b/a that makes you "official" and at least ensures that someone in the same town won't pick that same name for their business.

It's not like you are about to begin competing with distribution at a major national retailer. Don't make the project more than it needs to be. If you want to make it look more professional, find a good graphic designer to create a look-and-feel for you, and perhaps a logo that will help communicate your uniqueness and positioning.

Thank you for your input. I like the name and I especially like the tagline. I will definitley give this one some thought.

    mgoodman,
Thanks for the good suggestions. I do tend to over-kill and worry about the details! I especailly like the idea of getting a graphic artist to create my own look, maybe in a catchy looking business card. I know how much a first impression means in the retail business. I had an open house today that went tremendously well, so I am feeling good. Everyone especailly likes what I do with my vintage pieces, so maybe I will focus on that to make my jewelry distinctive from others. Thanks again! Pam
