Retail Store Name

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am establishing a retail furniture store. In the furniture industry, advertising is an enormous expense related to gross revenues.

I'm seriously considering naming the store Morning Wood Furniture Closeouts. I'm looking for something on the obsurd, yet not offensive. This name would stay inside peoples head.... I believe

Anyone think the name may work, or is too obsurd.

Thanks,
JSW

In regards to the catchiness, I agree with maxw, I would caution though with the target market you are trying to reach, if it is the younger 20 - 35 crowd that is more sexually open and do not follow typical taboos of society then I would say yes that name is great, but if you are going for a slightly older, more conservative market or just a broad market sweep (seeing as the economy is bad and all ages need to cut back on expenses) I would be careful using a phrase with any sort of inappropriate connotation. You may stick in a lot of customers minds with that name, but you may not stick with them the way you want to.

I have been a rep in this industry many years./ I don't know what "morning wood" means. Or why you would think of it as "stay in your mind catchy"/.

However Phil's suggestion is right on. If you are going to be absurd., be absurd. If you want to be a duck you should walk and talk like one.

PS. are you sure you are spelling absurd/obsurd right? That would be a big faux paux

I agree with JRichard... While the title "Morning wood" would be very catchy, you would be alienating a certain segment of the population...

And, also like JRichard hinted, with the way things are going right now... I don't think that any business can afford alienating customers if they don't need to.

I say go with another name. Maybe "Woodworks Furniture"?

A lot depends on whether you are trying to cater for lots of tastes, in which case a generic memorable name would work. If you are targeting a niche market, would it be better to allude to that in the name or tag line?

A couple of ideas for generics:
    Wood Rocks
    Solid Wood
    (Not checked out availability).

We offer a naming service because it can be so hard to come up with something that is free of bad history (you don't want other people's debtors lining up outside your door) and is available - and I don't mean just available as a domain name online. A company may have registered the name as a trademark and not feel the need to have the domain name.

Or there may be a limited company with that name already. The legal situation is different in each country, but a few hours of checks before adopting a trading name could save weeks of legal hassle later.

Best of luck with the new business.

I quite like the idea of calling a company Morning Wood…
it's like the London shoe shop "R Soles" hardly subtle!
Those that get it, get it… Maybe you could, erm, soften it a lttle by making it one word "Morningwood"… it has king of a bucolic, freshly hewn feel about it!
If your really brave you could follow through with your straplines… Bargains that are Hard to beat… Hard on Value…
Be careful though… there is a line there, make sure you know where it is, and don't cross it!
