I Need Help With Naming My Natural Pet Store Biz

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Hi,

I am starting an online pet store carrying natural and organic pet food, treats, toys, etc. I'm having a hard time coming up with a catchy name whose domain name isn't already taken.
I've taken some surveys amongst friends and family of some names I've come up with and these four were the highest rated:

All Natural Pet Mart - allnaturalpetmart.com
The Natural Pet World - thenaturalpetworld.com
The Natural Pet Place - thenaturalpetplace.com
Natural Pet Mart - naturalpetmart.com

I'm just not sold on any of these names.

I know that names don't always have to be memorable from the beginning that's where branding comes in. I don't think anyone would have ever thought "target" sounded like a good name for a store but...

I also came up with:
Planet Pet Store - planetpetstore.com
Natural Paws Pet Store - naturalpawspetstore.com

Also, since I'm an online biz only how important do you think it is for the name of my biz to *exactly* match the name of my domain? For example, I could call my biz natural paws (if that name is not registered in my state) and use naturalpawspets.com as my domain name. I've seen this done with some businesses where you can obviously tell the domain name wasn't available.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Thanks Phil.

I think the reason I am having such a hard time coming up with a name is because I was sort of bent of having the domain name match exactly. So in a way I was working backwards. Ideally, I would want them to match but as you mentioned that is next to impossible these days.

Since I developed my list of potential biz names by typing in names to see if the domain was available or not do you suggest going back to the drawing board and brainstorming some ideas the old fashioned way and then worrying about a domain name? This is the old chicken or egg thing. I wonder what comes first to most budding ecommerce sites, the domain name or the biz name? :-)

    Thanks again for your advice,

The alternative to matching the domain name to your business name is to develop a strapline that you can use for your URL,
ie: your business could be called The Natural Petstore, your strapline For Happy Pets, – The Natural Way, and your Url www.HappyPetsTheNaturalWay.com

As long as it's snappy and memorable (my example is probably a little long!) it 'sticks' in the mind!

I think Phil's suggestion of capital letters is spot on btw – it may save you the embarrassment of the Italian operation of the multinational PowerGen, who had the unfortunate url of www.powergenitalia.com ! (true - although I'm sure they've changed it now!)

You do not need to match your company name and your domain name, but they should compliment each other.

I think your best method will be to brainstorm diserable names and then search for complimentary domain names. You will want to be sure that your company name is not the same as another companies domain name as you will just drive them business.

In th online world, the company name is not as important as good Search Engine Optimization. People will not be searching for yourn company name, they will be lokking for particular products. The key is to design your site so that your pages come up in search engines when people search for particular items. This is much more important than the name. That being said it is great to incorporate some commonly used words that people would search in your industry in your domain name.

I know I did not throw out any names, but I hope this helps.

    Mike
