Need A Hierarchy For Product Names

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
For a company that manufactures electrical installation hardware (120V electrical receptacles, steel wall boxes for same, wire hangers, fasteners, etc. - all the electrical stuff hidden in the walls and ceiling) I am trying to come up with an overarching, perhaps organic, theme to exploit for developing unique new product-line names. An easy (and the worst example) would be a zoo and its inhabitants - Tiger-claw conduit connectors, Leech-lok couplers, Monkey-grip hangers, etc. - obviously tending toward the corny. Can you suggest ideas for some exploitable realm in common experience that would lend itself to the expropriation of related product names? Key attributes to convey are strength, durability, corrosion-resistance, innovation, suitability, ease-of-use, time-saving, labor-saving, etc. Thanks a lot for your interest and help.

One possibility might be playing cards. You could have different cards representing different products, and you could produce a deck of cards as a tradeshow giveaway. One benefit of the playing cards idea would be that cards work together to form a winning hand, just like your products work together to solve a problem.

Of course, if I were a total male chauvinist pig, I might suggest that you could even have pictures of pretty girls holding the products on the cards, but naturally, I would never suggest such an idea unprofessional forum such as this.

Perhaps the names of inventors? Edison, Fuller, etc.

The zoo names might not be too cheesy -- actually, look at the O'Reilly books. They do a beautiful job with their books, all labeled with animals. It all depends on how you present it. For example, instead of using "tiger claw" you might use a particular species of tiger.
