    Dear Dr. Ross,

In "The Art of War", Sun Tzu advises that when few in numbers, appear many.

This said, with your considerable qualifications and background your best bet might be to be you, with just a modicum of spin.

It's not technically inaccurate to give other people the
impression that one has considerable resources at one's disposal, and during the last ten years I suspect you've impressed many people with your writing ability and with your attention to detail.

Having worked with scientists and academics, I know first hand that they appreciate technical accuracy and a writer's ability to write (and edit), and that much like police officers, that they like facts.

This means your name will be, if not recognized, than at least known. So why not take advantage of the reputation you've
    spent a decade building?

    Why not just call yourself:

Ross Associates: Technical and Scientific Writers

This title clearly states your name (a strength), and what you do (your benefit).

Steve has given you six first rate suggestions and I'm afraid it's late at night and that my single suggestion is rather wimpy in comparison. I also know that many other, far more qualified writers than I, will give you lots of other names to choose from.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck with your new life in the land of the free and the land of the freelance.

    Kind regards,

(Aside: Since you have a doctorate, and your target market would value it, make sure it's mentioned somewhere in your name/tagline)

Thank you Steve, Gary and Jay

I agree to keep the focus on the name and the credentials. Adding the word "Technology" to Science appears also important.

    What do you think of:

    Nathalie Ross, Ph.D.
Scientific and Technical Writing with Precision

    or

    Nathalie Ross, Ph.D.
99.9999% Exact Scientific and Technical Writing

    Dear Nathalie

I think this version works well. But, with a colon or without?

    Nathalie Ross, Ph.D.
Scientific and Technical: Writing with Precision

    Il like it.

    How about:

    Nathalie Ross, Ph.D.
    Scientific and Technical Writing... Precisely

I'd be careful about getting too clever ... as with the "precisely" at the end. The people in your target audience are probably more likely to accept a straightforward and, well, precise description of your services. They'll see the flip attitude as being in the wrong character for what they need.

    Good point.

It seems that a tagline that would work for this type of business would be close to a job title:

    Nathalie Ross, PhD
    Scientific and Technical Writing

One more question, would you use:

    Scientific and Technical Writing
    or
    Scientific and Technical Writer
    ?
  • Posted on Accepted
If it were my decision, I'd use "Scientific and Technical Writing" because it focuses on what you do, not "Scientific and Technical Writer," which is who you are.

    Dear Nathalie,

To follow up on your last question, consider using the term
    "Writing", not Writer.

It sounds more productive and result-driven, which is exactly
what you clients will be looking for.

I hope this helps, and again: good luck to you.
