    Dear Charlieb1954,

Technically, a canteen is a mobile kitchen, but in many countries it's used to refer to a room in which groups of people eat.

Perhaps better descriptions for a room in which food is eaten by a group of people, or for a room to be used as a gathering space in which people eat at tables in a communal fashion could be:

"Cafeteria" or "Refectory" both of which suit your needs.

    I hope this helps.

"cafeteria" is a good solution. Also there is ...

    luncheonette, lunchroom, quick-lunch, snack bar

The U.S Military call their "canteens" a chow hall, a mess hall, a galley, mess decks or a dining facility.

Some UK monasteries, boarding schools and older universities refer to it as a refectory.

Today, most people simply refer to it as a "cafeteria", "dining hall" or even a "diner".

Maybe a snack bar, quick bar, fast bar, fast stop, quick stop.

    Hope this helps.

"The Kitchen" or "Dining Room" as a name would connect a room in a house with people that design homes.
