What Do You Think Of This Name ?

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am putting together a community information and resource site and have come up with a name which is an acronym for what the site is about.

The site will provide interactive news, information and resources on a localized basis and is called CIEXA (pronounced: "see ex ahh").

The name stands for Community Information EXchange Alliance.

Looking for feedback on the name to see what people think. I understand it can get pronounced differently and perhaps have an ethnic connotation... but hope not which is why I'm asking what people think. Google was taken :-)

part of the problem... as i'm sure many can relate to... is finding a name where the url is not yet taken. cixa was taken and I had thought of that... along with dozens of other names.

as far as being meaningless and confused - guess I didn't see that response coming... but something to consider if the experts say so. the goal is to make it recognizable in the eyes of the consumer over time. most people pronounce it right without prompting... I just put that in the original post for clarification.

    Dear realsysllc,

When it comes to community information, what terms are people in the community you're talking about searching for?

Let's say your community is called Waterville. What makes more sense when I live in Waterville and I need a plumber, for me to look for "plumbers in Waterville" or "Community Information EXchange Alliance plumbers"?

CIEXA sounds clever, but people generally don't waste time looking for clever. They spend time looking for answers to specific problems.

I suggest you drop the whole Alliance thing and name your forum (the name of your community) Information Exchange.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but if there are ANY rules in marketing, Rule #1 ought to be this:

Position your message so that it appeals to the specific dreams, wants, desires, aspirations, and needs of the prospects and potential customers who are looking to solve their particular problem.

    I hope this helps.

    Dear realsysllc,,

According to www.namecheap.com, the domain name communityinformationexchange.com is currently available.

Were I in your shoes, I'd bag it before it gets snatched up by someone else.

    On your marks? Set? Go!

this is a national "interactive" thing with multiple community divisions. kind of like topix. need a short 4 or 5 letter name.

you go to google right? you don't go to 'waterville search engine find me a plumber dot com'. i'm trying to build catchy name that people remember. hope to get it to the point where people say: hey... post that on CIEXA or ... CIEXA has links for that.

thank you for looking up that other url but that's too long for what i'm trying to do. i welcome any other ideas for names with 4 or 5 letters... where the url is not yet taken.

How about: cixa.info or cexa.info (or even ce.info)? These domains are currently available. You don't need a .com for an informational portal.

    Dear realsysllc,

As the questioner, you will receive answers based on the information you put into your original question. Yours said:

"The site will provide interactive news, information and resources on a localized basis"

    Localized.

Then suddenly it's "a national "interactive" thing with multiple community divisions. Kind of like topix. Need a short 4 or 5 letter name."

Make your needs clear and you'll receive clearer responses. I urge you to do this, to take the time to help yourself and the people answering your question because alas, my crystal ball does not work.

So please, don't come back to a someone who's taken time to supply an answer and start telling them (or in this case, me) how to use Google with all this nonsense about "you go to google right? you don't go to 'waterville search engine find me a plumber dot com'"

Go back and READ MY RESPONSE and you'll see that I mentioned NOTHING about Waterville dot anything.

My response is an example of a long tailed keyword search, the kind of question most people type into a search engine.

Most people do not have a specific need that they equate WITH
a particular site until the site in question has created enough momentum to CREATE THAT RESPONSE.

That's what branding is all about.

The whole notion here of people going to Google is warped because for many people, Google is their home page, which means although it's there, they don't see it.

You're looking for a catchy name that people will remember? That's great but could it be that you're going about things the wrong way? The name is NOT what matters, it's what your site allows people to DO and where it takes them that matters.

You have a LOT of distance to cover between now and your hope to get your system to the point where people say: "Hey... post that on CIEXA or ... CIEXA has links for that."

I hope you make this journey swiftly, truly I do. But on your way, be more mindful of the opinions you step on, particularly when someone is attempting to help you.

What you're talking about building here is NOT a community website, you're really talking about creating a new search engine.

You want short names? Try these:

    needa.com
    whatsit.com
    findmea.com
    geddit.com
    thunkit.com
    wheresit.com
    dingdong.com
    fefifo.com

    Good luck to you.
