Topic: Taglines/Names

Egardenhome Or Mygardenplans.com

Posted by Anonymous on 750 Points
I'm developing home and landscape design software that runs online. Since it runs online, people can easily share their designs and get feedback and praise from others. The site features a large plant database. In the future, I want to add a forum. The site will focus primarily on gardening, but I want people to know that it does home design really well also...don't want to exclude that market.

I need help choosing the best name for the website. I'm deciding between eGardenHome.com and myGardenPlans.com. Currently, it's using [inactive link removed]. Personally, I think myGardenPlans.com is better because it's more direct and less confusing, but I'm concerned that making the change will pigeon-hole me into just gardening. Should I be concerned about making the change for this reason?

Or, BIG KUDOS to anyone that can find a better domain name for under $500.

THANK YOU!!!

    Dear Scott,

Your preferred choice (myGardenPlans.com), may resonate more with your audience. Of the two, I think it's the stronger.

but to know for sure, buy several domain names and split test the names in your ads or promotional material. Keep all the other information in the material the same and change just the domain name. The name that brings in the most traffic would the, logically, be the best name ie: the one most searched for or the one that's most compelling.

Unless you've already done so, you might want to try using Google's keyword search to suggest the most searched for terms in your niche and build a domain name from there.

As for other domain names, according to www.namecheap.com, the following, garden-related domain names are all currently available.

To register a domain name with NameCheap costs $9.69.

    designmyperfectgarden.com
    theperfecthomegarden.com
    designyourhomeandgarden.com
    designtheperfectgarden.com

I hope this helps. Good luck to you.

mygardenhome.com might have been a good option, but as you already know it is pointing to https://www.bringinggardenstolife.com

Maybe the focus on landscaping should turn to researching the "competitive landscape". A well researched well developed positioning strategy will probably open creative doors to entirely different naming possibilities. For example, your online business model could impact your name e.g. if you were an "aggregation data garden home designing portal" what names would come to mind?

    hope this helps,

    Steve

As Phil suggests, the name WE prefer is not relevant. What matters more (and exclusively) is what your target audience would prefer. And there's nothing that says you must only have one domain name. You can have dozens ... and test your way to the most effective keywords for each ... or simply redirect from the "losers" to the winners.

The following domains are all available:

    MyHomeAndGardenDesigner.com
    MyHGDesigner.com
    HGDesignCentral.com
    MyHomeDesigned.com + MyGardenDesigned.com
    MyHomePlanned.com + MyGardenPlanned.com

By having a keyword in your domain name, you get a little extra SEO bump (as described here: https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-yahoo-microsoft-seo-influence-of... )

Thanks for all of the great answers. I've decided to use https://www.egardenhome.com.

@ccplato also brought up a god point...

"you will have a community challenge of growing both the home design group while attracting and building one of the web's better communal sites for sharing gardening thoughts."
