Opinion On Company Name

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
My name is Michelle and I am starting up an event planning business. I have come up with the name "Mi-Shell Productions" (pronounced "My") with a tagline of: "Every event as unique as a shell". I envision my logo to have a shell incorporated within it. I am concerned that it may not be catchy enough as well as not wanting people to hear the name and think I am arrogant naming my business after myself and completely miss the correlation. Please share your opinion and any suggestions on a better name if you have one. Thank you.

There's nothing arrogant about branding your own name. Be proud of it, and definitely use it if you want to:

    Kromer Productions, Inc.
    Michelle Kromer Productions, Inc.

Tag: Event Planning for Every Occasion

If you're going to be doing corporate events, I'd forgo the shell
and have a great logo crafted by an experienced graphic designer.

    Good Luck!

I think Sue has given you good advice, give her the points. When I think of a "shell" brand , I think of Shell Oil.

I would not try to be too cute in the name. Either use your own name -- spelled the way you spell it -- or capture the most important benefit you deliver to your clients.

As for the shell, my vote would be to drop it altogether. If you feel you need some symbol in your logo, and if orchids are common where you live, there's probably nothing wrong with using an orchid. It's better than a shell because it's living and "warm," while a shell is hard/cold. I usually leave the specific design in the logo up to a professional graphic designer; they think visually, which is what you want in a logo.

Your job is to write a creative brief that sets out the specs and your expectations for a good logo, not to actually design it.

If you're wed to using a shell or orchid in your name (to match your location), then keep it simple:

    Orchid Events
    Events By Michelle
    Two Grains Of Sand Events

If you really want to add something sub tropical in your name or logo, have your graphic designer take the "i" in Halpin and have him/her either use a small shell shape or an orchid to dot the "i."
    (or something like that)

And while my advice may not excite you much, these guys know what they're talking about. I'd consider their suggestions carefully; they have your best interests at heart. :)

    Good luck.
