Niche Photography - Need A Name Thats Not Overdone

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I do freelance photography on the side, and am starting to have enough pictures around that I would like a name. Given the abundance of photographers creeping up around the country and trying to make a go of it, finding something unique is hard. Here's a couple talking points:

-I live in Billings, Montana, Yellowstone county. Overused: Big Sky, Peak, Prairie, Stillwater, Yellowstone, Madison, Treasure State, Portrait, Magic, Picture This,

-Photography is people photography. Currently doing families and single portraits, but that is going to be pushed to a niche portrait studio when we get the studio going in the back. Specialties will be newborn, pregnancy, couple and single boudoir, and dance stills (Native American and belly dancing specifically). I am working on developing some techniques to start doing these on location sooner.

-I currently do only natural light on location. Even with the studio the majority of the work will be on location, and as much in the studio will be done with natural light as possible.

-My name is not an option. My first name (Lynsey) is hard to spell and I want people to be easily able to find a website and remember an email. I dislike the alliteration of my full name (Lynsey Lund). Cursive L's are pretty though, so would be ok with using L's somehow.

-After the niche portraits are established, I am going to expand into architectural photography and heritage series. So people can do sort of a photo-documentary of their heritage, both people and spaces. There are a lot of historical farmhouses, barns, etc etc that people would like documented with their heritage or genealogy for preservation. Again, a future project but would like to not have to change the name.

-Possibly on the side I will sell some landscapes. Mainly large-scale wall prints (11x14 and up), greeting cards, coasters, screen savers, type of thing. I don't want this to be the focus, but would be willing to go shoot on request/for hire.

Help?! :) I'm actually a marketer by degree and training but am having some brainstorming and idea issues, especially since I am so close to the project. Nothing seems right. I was exploring something subtle that leans toward the boudoir and pregnancy photos, along the lines of innuendos or insinuations or intimations or the like, but couldn't formulate the thoughts.

Perhaps something related to the Outside nature of family shots and then also open for exterior growth but with a little 'spice added'...with all the trapping left behind. Raw Workflow type ..

    Photography In The Raw

    Photography On The Hoof

Thanks for all the weekend responses! I didn't realize I had put my work email down so couldn't check over the weekend, sorry.

I suppose I could use L.Lund -- the L's are pretty and I like to write them. Somehow after being married for 5 years I still don't really like my last name ;)

I like the Intimate Images -- but does it lean too much toward the boudoir/pregnancy and not encompass the newborn and general family and portraits? Do I need to go more toward "natural" type?

The road idea is pretty interesting, I might have to look into that more, maybe finding a local name for a road. Chinook is very popular a bit north of where I am (I am in Billings, southeast of the state) near Great Falls and the actual town of Chinook. Geographically I would probably stay away from that since it would confuse a lot of locals. Other terms to stay away from would be Flathead, Gallatin, and any reference to Native American terms.

"In the Raw" is pretty creative, though I don't shoot in RAW (yet, I need to save up some money for a new computer to do the more intense photo editing.) For now I shoot JPEGs and try to get them so I don't have to do much correction.

Thanks for the ideas, I would appreciate any other input you have.
