Naming A Marketing Consultancy

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
well, I'm just getting the ball rolling on naming a business. and I have my own ideas about how to name a business...but I thought I'd reach out to the marketingprofs community and ask what strategies you would take.

Here are some I've been considering
-ease of spelling
-url avail
-similar names
-yahoo, google phenomena...invented words
-search terms

what else do you think is important?

    > Something which clues people in to what you do... think of the name in conjunction with a tagline or brand statement.
    > Consider how it sounds out loud (does it roll off the tongue easily? Are there potential common pitfalls - see Jay's comment, above) You may never do radio advertising, but you'll probably say the name aloud thousands of times. And strangers, introducing you, for instance, at an event, or reading a business card, should be able to easily say / grasp the name.
    > How does it look, visually? Yes, Google is a made-up word, but it provides interesting visual possibilities because it has ascenders, descenders, and a repeated shape (o and g) in the middle.

Once you have your criteria list, rank them in order of importance to you, then use them to filter your brainstorming. And recognize that you may find a a name you love, and your list may suddenly not matter! :)
