Tagline Help

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am launching a Youth Ministry in a few months that is completely nontraditional in its structure and not your normal church ministry. We have come up with a tagline and want your advice on it. "Experience whats outside the box!" Also if you have any suggestions on a tagline that is welcomed. The name of the ministry is Koi (pronounced Koy).

Could be a good tagline, depending on the name of the ministry. (Does it communicate who the target audience is and why they might be interested?)

Of course, the "outside the box" metaphor has been overused to the point where it's becoming trite. A lot of people don't even think about what it means anymore ... other than "different."

The CONCEPT, though, should appeal to young people who are questioning traditional organized religious affiliation. I presume that's the objective, right?

And what does KOI mean? Will anyone know (other than you)?

And you need an apostrophe in "what's." (English teacher comment; I couldn't resist.)

From my experience Koi are ornamental carp....is that inline with your meaning?

Using a management/change/growth theme for young people might miss the mark.
Encouraging them to 'Experience' might lead them into all sorts of uncharted 'waters' also.

If the defn: of Koi fits your young people; perhaps life outside your POND might be suitable. ... or your Fishbowl etc.
    I'm sure you get it.

Yes our whole target group are those who are unchurched and those who are churched but tired of traditional organized religious affiliation.

Koi actually is short for the Greek word Koinonia, which means to fellowship. It just so happens that when we look at the koi fish we see how different they are from most fish. They dont swim in normal ponds and are definitely outside the norm. So to Novahammer something like that "perhaps life outside your POND might be suitable. ... or your Fishbowl etc. " might work. Thanks for the input looking forward to more.

Now that I understand what Koi is, I'd suggest either a different name or some way to define it for your target audience. They're not going to know what it means any more than we did. Why make this a challenge for them? Why can't the name tell them the benefit in clear, non-cryptic terms? Or do you want this to seem like a secret society?

These are all awesome comments both mgoodman and wmma. Here is my dillema, when I first came up with the name it was because that is my favorite greek word. I just couldn't see myself calling the ministry Koinonia to reach a young generation. So Koi just really stuck with me, intrigued me and others leaders in my circle.

So when I hear Koi, I think of a club or lounge of some sort. It doesn't sound like a normal church or ministry. Could we perhaps lengthen the name like "KoI [fel-oh-ship]"

What are some Good names and Taglines for a youth ministry that is nontraditional in its structure and service reaching the un-churched and those who have fallen away from Church.

Also I wanted the name to be a question in their mind as to what we are all about, intrigue them and catch their attention.

If you're not adverse to using the logo of a Koi fish and explaining what Koi means in your marketing, then Koi Ministry could work (there's the other connection to ichthys, which is quite good). However, just because YOU like the name doesn't mean it's a good name. Is the name attractive (or at least neutral) to the youth you're targeting?

I'm not fond of your tagline ("Experience what's outside the box"), since there's no connection to the youth. You could use "Not Your Parents' Church", "Swim In A Different Direction", or even "Fishing For A Young Church?".

"Ministry" will scare away many before they even consider your differences.

'StillWater' still suits your Koi image/logo & intrique thoughts.
    Compassionate Thinkers Needed.

Again remembering that you said many have left or rebelled against traditional Faith Institutions.

The tagline here invites more investigation to allow you to explain your offer.

    GoodLuck
