Need Help Naming My Blog And Online Shop

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am an interior decorator and former brick-and-mortar home and lifestyle/design store owner. I need a great name for an e-commerce store and affiliated/linked blog. The store's goods are hand-picked vintage mid-20th century items (small furniture, home accessories), new Scandinavian handmade goods (art, ceramics, functional design), and some artist-made prints, jewelry, toys, and other goods for the home, children, and personal accessories. The blog will come first, and will be used to market the eventual online shop as well as my decorating services. I would like to have a strong name, possibly one word, that lends itself to a compelling logo and branding, as I would like to eventually also have a brick-and-mortar shop/studio. My aesthetic is similar to that of these magazines and blogs: Domino, Vogue Living Australia, Apartment Therapy, Desire to Inspire. Thanks for reading!

We can definitely help. A few questions first:

    1. Who is your primary target audience? Where do they live? What magazines do they read? What websites and blogs are they visiting today? What makes them tick? How do they make decisions to buy (or not buy) things like yours? Do they make the decisions by themselves, or do they consult with someone else?

    2. How are they going to find out about you? Where are you going to advertise? Or do you expect them to somehow stumble across your blog? What is your marketing plan?

    3. What is your key positioning benefit? What makes you different from and better than all the other websites that have the same kind of merchandise? What's in it for your target audience to buy from you?

Help us with this information, and we'll come up with a great name for you.

It would also help if you can tell us how you'll know a winning name when it shows up. What are the criteria you'll use to pick one name over another? What one person thinks is "great" may not be the same as what another thinks is "great." It will help us to know what you are thinking.

Thanks for your response. I have thought about your questions, and here is my plan so far, although it is still developing. My target audience is the regular reader of blogs like Apartment Therapy, Design Sponge, Remodelista, Swiss Miss, Absolutely Beautiful Things. They read magazines like Elle Decoration UK, Living, Etc., Vogue Living, and they used to read Domino when it still existed. My audience is primarily urban, many in New York City and Brooklyn, 30-55 year-olds, many young couples with small children, and many in their first home. They will buy most items for their home of their own accord, and will buy a mix of new, modern furniture mixed with choice, mainly Danish-modern pieces (like an iconic Eames rocker or a thrifted or ebayed walnut credenza). They like DIY and home improvement television shows. I plan to use my mailing list of customers from my former store to attract my initial audience to my blog and later to the online shop. I will also link my blog to some of the artists' sites whose work I will be selling. I have not ruled out purchasing ads, but prefer to have mention in magazines and other, bigger blogs. (I had great success with my store with this approach--simply emailing a specific product or products to a magazine for consideration in their gift guide is one instance). What will make my blog different is my perspective of having moved from NYC to Sweden, which I will write about. This will also affect the shop offerings, as I am collecting thrifted finds at Swedish markets, as well as buying things from local artists and craftspeople.

I hope this helps, but let me know if you need more information. I appreciate the help!

I forgot to mention my preferences about the name. I would like something short and strong, it can be a totally random noun or verb. I will make a logo around this name, and would like to be able to incorporate it into the shop's product categories. It could also be a name, a last name (again, random, but something that people will remember). I don't believe it has to directly convey what my blog or shop is, and I would like to avoid the words "modern" and "design" (way overused). A single strong name, like "Lodge" or "Percy" (I am not considering these, just using as examples) is something I'm drawn to, but not married to.

    Dear skytownkerry,

Michael's insightful questions and your detailed answers all give great background and all paint vivid pictures.

But the real gold is in your last paragraph (above).

When it comes to your blog and site name, I urge you to reconsider terms such as "modern" and "design".

Your preferences for names and your preferences about NOT
using certain terms are, sadly, irrelevant. You might be weary of them and you may thing they're way overused, but the truth is, your potential readers, blog browsers, searchers, clients, and customers are not.

A keyword search on Google reveals that in November alone,
the term "modern design" was searched for 246,000 times, with the term "modern designs" pulling in 60,500 searches, and "modern interior design" pulling a not too shabby 22,200 searches.

Rather than catering to your preferences, your name needs to focus on your customer's and readers Manhattan urbanite, loft-living COMPULSIONS, and your name needs to clearly telegraph
an impression of what's in store—instore.

    NYCModernLiving.com is available
    ManhattanCountry.com is available

If your preferences don't matter, what DOES matter? The things, dreams, impressions, visions, and aspirations your potential customers are looking for.

You're not selling furniture and found objects as art, you're offering a lifestyle reflection and I urge you to focus on elements that reflect the things your customers are looking for.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck to you.

Thanks so much! Your comments were very helpful. I realize now that I may be tired of some words and tags, but my potential audience and clients will be looking for those words. I will do some more research and seriously consider your opinions. You have really helped me to focus.

Both of these domains are available:

DagnyLife.com ("Dagny" is an old female Scandinavian name meaning "new day" - it also encompasses the word NY within).

    urbanda.ne
