Open-house Style Winery Tours - Naming/branding

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Growing california wine region looking to name quarterly open-house style winery tours. County is "Placer." Sponsoring organization is Placer County Vintner's Association (newly formed trade association of commercial wineries). Tour was previously called "Placer Hills Winery Tours" but there is a confusion between Placer County and "Placerville" which is actually in another county/wine region. Want to brand Placer County as different an apart from Placerville. Region is the "Sierra Foothills" but some wineries don't like the "Hills" part of the name because they aren't actually in the hills. Area's heritage is gold rush/gold country. Please visit www.placerhillswinetour.com for details. Plan is to launch a new website with new tour name and corresponding marketing materials. It is similar to passport weekends, but these weekends are free, there are four (thus "quarterly"), open-house style and it's up to each winery what special activities they have going on. For more info on the region and the wineries themselves, please visit www.pcwga.org.

I think Peter's "Gold country wine tours" works well.

As an alternative "Sierra Gold Wine Tours"

Thank you all for your responses. I am going to share w/my team. I agree on the "Placer" issue -- we just can't use it in the name.

FYI...the neighboring county, Nevada County has a winery called "Sierra Knolls" and "Sierra Vista" winery is in Placerville! So unfortunately, we have to stay away from that path as well.

We are I think, the newest (in the organized marketing campaign sense) California wine region, which means the last to the name game as well!

After going over all the variaition our Marketing Committee liked 80/49 -- although not sexy, we felt it took care of the location/Placer issue and wouldn't leave much open to confusion. Well...our member wineries may not be ready for such a change yet. We are back to the drawing board and tasked with keeping "Placer" in the name.
