Need Help With A Business Name

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I could really use everyones help. I am setting up an LLC account and need a good, clever if at all possible name. Here is my dilemma- I do a number of things so it cannot be specific to one particular thing. I build websites, do graphic design, do marketing for people, I am also a mortgage professional by day and some of my money can be paid to me via my LLC which helps me at tax time. My name is Rob - my initials are RCH (or just RH) - I thought about using my inititals such as RCH Services...but it's so boring. Can anyone throw out some kind of fun, word play, or clever name for me to name an LLC so I can accept payments for all of the things I do? Complicated right? I know. My mind is a blank. Help!

What are you trying to communicate with the name? If you don't have any particular communication objective, then any name will do. RCH Services will work. So will RH Services.

Clever names are a true waste of creative energy. They don't do anything for your business. And a boring, generic name at least keeps you from being thought of as a lousy comedian.

Your real problem is that your business has no focus, no central target audience, and no real common thread (other than your own involvement ... and customers/clients don't care about your name).

    Rob,

It's hard to name a business that does so many different things. I don't think you'll do yourself justice if you choose one name for your company - think about how you'll market, set up a website, etc for a marketing mortgage broker that does graphic design.

That being said, please consider: the name of your LLC does not have to be the name of your business. I mean, the name you slap down on the LLC paperwork will always be your official name for taxes, purchases, permits, important stuff. But the name you use on your website, the name you present to the public, can be different. You always disclose that the ABC Graphic Company is part of XYZ LLC, but the name of that graphic company can be different. It's just a matter of filling out the "Doing Business As" paperwork.

I'm no legal expert or tax accountant, so please be sure to talk to these professionals before following this advice. And check out this gov website:

I don't think you should rush into naming, period. Don't sell your business/yourself short by trying a catch-all name. You have great skills and you want to be able to market them well. Like a good professional name for the mortgage biz and a wittier, creative name for the graphic design. I agree with making it easy on yourself to only have one entity for tax purposes, but consult an accountant first.

Hope this helps. Best of luck to you,

I really appreciate all of your thoughts. Yes I am aware that my LLC name doesn't have to be the actual business name itself...I have a number of different businesses and things I do, so I have a few different names. I guess I am just trying to consolidate some into one main name, with a handful of trade names underneath it (if that makes sense) example: I have a friend who named his LLC "looking forward enterprises." I thought that was great. Then within that name he had a few others that he actually marketed. I am sorry if I am confusing you all... I just want something sharp that would appeal to almost anything. No need necessarily to have my initials - just a main name for me.

    Rob,

OK, got you. Here are some thoughts:

    Ducks in a Row LLC
    Prodigy Enterprises
    A Full Plate LLC
Many Irons Enterprises (something with many irons in the fire)
    Enterprising Enterprises (ha ha!)
    Kindle Enterprises
    Nine to Five Enterprises

Not your average stuffy names. I hope one of these sparks a great idea in you. Good luck!

    Karen,

Yes, Yes...THAT is what I was looking for. Maybe I should have worded it better - I think I just confused everyone. Thank you for your suggestions!
