Help Naming A Marketing Business

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Need help naming my company and any ideas you may have for a tagline. Currently use my last name and "Consulting." However, I want something that provides a better sense of what I do and something that people will easily remember, my last name does not qualify. My focus is on an individual's or company's website. I conduct a needs assessment, gathering information about the business and then focus first on the website. I conduct a critique and gather information from there and branch outwards (e.g., competition analysis) to help people with expanding and/or enhancing their products and services and building their client base.

The problem that I have run into with naming my business is that I have had many great ideas and then find out someone else beat me to it. Therefore, I can't get an appropriate url to use. I also want a name that leaves room for the business to go grow.

My most recent idea was Webcentric Marketing. The name indicates that the main focus is on the web but it shouldn't limit what else I can do.. However, there is no .com available for that. Only .info or .net. If you think I shouldn't let that get in the way of using this name let me know.

Thanks in advance for your help.

A couple of ideas to get you thinking (both domains available):
    WebInsideOutMarketing.com
    TheWebOfMarketing.com

    I prefer Phil's approach.

Unless you are a large organization with many associates and a large talent pool, your clients are really paying for you. Since the skills and expertise are delivered by you, and the relationship is with you, then your name is most appropriate.

As a side note, just because a domain name is available doesn’t mean you can use it for your business. For example, if McDonalds.org was available, I couldn’t use it and sell hamburgers without inviting a truckload of legal problems. If you find a domain you like, you still need to do a proper legal name search. Using your own name helps eliminate most of these types of challenges.

    Karen:

I don't know about others on this thread, but it would help me (and you) (and your prospects) if you gave us your elevator speech.

If the name of your company depends on what you do, you should have your services crystallized into a 30-second oral description. Base the company name on that.

If the name of your company does not depend on what you do - e.g., Pennervessy and Associates - then the elevator speech can wait.

If your clients love your work, it doesn't matter what you call your company, because they're just going to remember your name, unusual or not.

I agree with Phil and others who support using your name. Your name with the right tagline is your brand. You will be able to modify your tagline over time and your name, your anchor will always be yours.

There are many available urls still out there, for example
netsynchronicity.com is available, but I wouldn't recommend that you use it.

    hope this helps,

    Steve
