Opening A Pet Waste Removal Business. Need Name

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I'm starting a pet waste removal business and I'm trying to think of a name that isn't taken already. I don't know the legality of choosing a business name...I'm assuming there can't be another business in the same country w/ my same name. Anyone know if that's true? I would also love any ideas for business names. I'm at the very beginning of this, so I still need everything...name, logo, slogan, etc.

Thanks,
Ashley

The basic rule is that you can't choose a name that could be confused with someone else in similar business. If your work is local, in the past you only needed to worry about the geographies local to you. Has gotten a bit more challenging with the advent of the internet, as web sites aren't local, so 2 companies on opposite sides of the country may both have wed sites using the name, causing possible conflict.

If you like a name someone else is using in another geography (and they look to be a local only business), one way around that is to change it slightly, perhaps by also adding something signifying your geography.

Avoid taking names close to the ones that are looking to franchise. Too great a chance they will move to your area at some point in the future, and if they had the name first, they could force you to change your name. DoodyCalls and Pet Butler both look to be doing this.

If you haven't yet, you may want to check out a book for start ups I strongly recommend - covers all areas of starting a business, including intellectual property (trade marks, patents, etc.).

As far as a name for your business, please tell us more about you/your business: Where are you located? What do you specialize in? Who are your customers? Why would they hire you? Why wouldn't they hire your competition? What sort of names appeal to you (and why)?

Just make sure once you have a name - make a fan page on facebook and twitter - and use social marketing to push it like crazy.
