Name & Logo For An Eclectic, Upmarket Homewares/gift Shop

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi all,

This is my first posted question so please bare with me, hope I give you all the details you need.

I'm currently in the process of purchasing a retail unit in a popular seaside town, known for its fairly affluent residents and popular with holiday makers (particularly retirees & families). I plan on opening an upmarket furniture, homewares and gift shop. The building is Victorian set over two floors and has a real nook and cranny kind of feel so want it to be cram packed full of eclectic, fascinating wares to keep the customers exploring and hopefully buying. I would really love some ideas for a name and accompanying logo that will appeal to all whilst encompassing the lifestyle/essence of what I’m trying to sell. I would really appreciate everyone’s input.

Thanks Becky

You've come to the right place, Becky. We can definitely help you. A suggestion and an observation.

First the suggestion: You probably ought to find a name that is closely related to your specific location. The thing that's most noticeably unique about your business is the location. You want to capture the feeling of the town in your name. Make it very clear that what you sell is the "essence" of your community, as represented by the merchandise in your store.

If you want to tell us where you will be opening the business, we can try to incorporate it. If you'd rather not say, then see the observation below.

The observation: You probably need to get a professional creative team on this case, in any event, rather than rely on catch-as-catch-can input. You're only going to get one shot at naming and creating the identity for your new business. You don't want to risk that it will sound amateurish or be off-putting to your target audience.

The name and the logo are very important, as you undoubtedly recognize, and this identity package should be treated as a key element of your marketing plan.

Hope this helps some. We really can't do much more without knowing specifically where you'll be.

    What price range?
Are these goods more functional or more decorative?
Are the goods unique to your store, or can they find them elsewhere (either in other local stores or online)?
Are the goods for use locally, or are you imagining people buying and shipping the products back to their residence?
How much of the purchases do you imagine are for special occasions vs. everyday needs?
Besides shopping at the store, is there a reason for people to sit and enjoy your space (i.e., a reading nook, etc.)?

    Hi,

Thanks all for your speedy responses I will try to answer as many of your queries as I can.

Firstly the town I will be setting up in is Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey so I hope that helps in the first instance.

Secondly I will almost certainly be enlisting the help of professionals such as a creative team/graphic designer before my name/logo comes to fruition and perhaps poses a question in itself as to whether anyone can recommend a suitable company/individual that would suit.

Finally a little more info on my shop: As I mentioned the shop is set over 2 floors and is a fairly sizable premises for the village. My plan is to start by sourcing the larger pieces which will be statement, mostly antique reproduction furniture (fairly pricy items such as book shelves, display cabinets, coffee tables, dressing tables etc), marked up but also doubling as displays for smaller items. The furniture items will be shipped items and I also plan on carrying wholesale brochures for matching/complimentary pieces for the customer to browse through and order if they wish. I will then look at ordering in decorative items such as mirrors, lamps and soft furnishings etc which I envisage may warrant some stock but also wish to offer a shipping option. The smaller items I imagine will make up the majority of day to day sales and will consist or items made from local artists/craftsmen (many on a sale or return basis) which I hope will appeal to holiday makers as gifts/souvenirs but also to local people as a supportive community gesture (jewellery, cards, ornaments artwork etc). Supporting/complementing these ranges with wholesale gift items and more brand names but avoiding cheap and gimmicky souvenir items.

I don’t envisage an area where customers sit and read etc. I am however considering looking at areas of interaction that may draw children or the child in us all (something that people will go away from the shop talking about) such as a vending fortune teller/oldie worldie penny machines what do you think?

Anyway time for me to stop rattling on, hope I have answered your questions satisfactorily, I look forward to reading your responses.

    Hi Guys,

I have rounded down shop name thoughts down to:

Whimsy - the obvious whimsical/unusual wares route

Majesty - thought sounded high end

Rainbowtique - my play on words option injecting colour/suggests great range/boutique

ffantasi - meaning fantasy/daydream in Welsh which I thought would appeal to locals and paints a nice picture of desiring my wares.

    I would really appreciate feedback.

    Thanks
    Becky
