I have a current business but hate my name. www.craftingonthecourt.etsy.com is my current site. I currently crochet children hats and eventually will move on to adult hats and possably other children accessories.
I want to change my name to something shorter and more childlike but doesn't scream kids! Please help!

I think Phil may be right on this one. You have a reasonable level of awareness under the current name, you've recently started your own website with that as a domain name, and the name itself will allow you to expand to other knit or sewn items very easily.

The fact that YOU don't love the name is really YOUR problem. From a business perspective, I think I could make a pretty strong case that says you should keep it, and learn to change your own attitude toward it rather than change the name itself.

Another important point: Generic names -- those that are so general that you can do almost anything with them -- are usually the worst names of all from a communication standpoint. They don't really tell exactly what you do, they don't identify your primary target audience, and they don't suggest a benefit to which your customers might actually be attracted.

It's true your current name is "generic," in that sense, but at least it's a known entity by a core group of customers and their contacts. I would think hard before I would change it.

Wow okay... i get that but I contemplated this a year ago and i convinced myself to not change my name, like all you guys are saying...however here i am a year later and still want it changed!! i guess i am selfish...cause it is my business and i'm the only person involved at this point!
everyone who has purchased from me i have contact info for and would let them know of my name change!!

Anyhow... I was thinking something with COTTON in the title because i work with alot of cotton!

To avoid a similar problem a year from now, pick a name that's focused less on what you're selling today and more on what you want to be selling in 5 years from today. Still planning to sew? Still planning to offer things that only you make? Still planning to do children's and adult's hats? Still planning to work with cotton?

Why did you pick "Crafting On The Court" as your name? Why was it appealing both to you and your prospective clients?

You might be better served by creating a new new business name for adult hats, and another for other sewing stuff. A focused name is likely to be more specific, and therefore more memorable rather than a generic encompassing name that doesn't mean much at first glance.

If you're renaming the business because you want to satisfy your own need to feel creative, then name it anything you want. It's not a business or marketing issue at all, and it doesn't matter what we think.

If, on the other hand, you view your name as an important element in your marketing plan, and a way to communicate something about your business to casual browsers, then you should either (a) stick with your current name, or (b) come up with a name that expresses the emotional benefit, or payoff, for your customers.

"Cotton" doesn't say much that anyone would care about ... except perhaps someone who is allergic to wool. (Hey, it's just a fiber.) And it does have some baggage among knitwear aficionados ... shrinkage, elongation, not as colorfast, lightweight thermal properties, etc.

I'd go for the emotional benefit if you really insist on changing a name that has served you well.

Okay so i've decided to change the name... i'm not asking you if i should or not!! Already decided!! So i just want ideas on things to call my business!! I mostly name baby products...so if i branch out to adults it would just be hats! Therefore i guess the name could have something to do with children in general! and i could make another branch of it for adult hat line! So what i'm asking is merely for name suggestions!
