Business Name

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I have a branded sailboat soft product business but within the last year I have developed a very unique line of shell / stone/ nautical / sea life jewelry set in sterling silver. I have been extremely successful selling the products at Art shows and Festivals. I need a name other than the sailboat business name, which I have been using and does not reflect the jewelry business, that would enable me to brand the jewelry line. My shells and stones are from Bali, Africa, South America, Mexico and other wonderful far off places. I want to incorporate the shells and ocean / sea into the name. Any creative suggestions?

Who is the primary target audience? Where do they live? And how do you plan to reach that audience? Will you just show up at art shows and festivals, or are you thinking you might expand beyond that?

The name should capture the emotional payoff you offer your prospective clients, not the "mechanics" or features of your products.

You might want to sell the exotic nature of the source ... essentially saying "you can own a piece of the exciting and romantic world."

Or you can tell your customers that their friends will notice how worldly they are when they buy and wear your jewelry.

Going to an emotional payoff (i.e., an end-benefit or an end-end-benefit) will be much more powerful than telling them you sell shells and stones.

I've found that choosing a business name goes hand in hand with choosing a domain name. In some cases domain name availabilty has been dictated by the availabilty of a domain name.

    I use these guidelines:

    1. Always a .com
    2. Short and memorable
    3. Under 15 characters

jbooher: Doesn't that apply to online businesses only? If she plans to sell mostly at local art shows and fairs, or even at a bricks-and-mortar storefront, is the domain name that important?

My inclination would be to find the name that's right for her target audience (the humans), and then figure out what the domain name should be. Of course it would be great if they're precisely the same, but I'm not sure the conclusions from your experience really apply to everyone.

miamisailormom: What about an approach that refers to a pirate's booty, as in:

    Blackbeard's Bounty (or Booty)
Precious Jewelry from the High (or Seven) Seas

    A Pirate's Reward (or Treasure)
Beautiful Jewelry from Ports of Call

    Barbary Treasures
Jewelry Rewards from the World's Oceans

The idea is to say "exotic" or "exciting" by referring to the pirates. (And feel free to mix and match the tagline elements.)

mgoodman: Sure it applies to online business, but she might as well start with a web presense in mind.

etsy, amazon, ebay, craigslist, custom website...

...promoted via facebook, twitter, myspace, blogs.

    Silver Tickle
The word Tickle appears to refer to a narrow channel between two or more islands, or between islands and the mainland, through which the tide runs with considerable force. The Silver is your water the 'tickle' is the pleasure/treasure part.

Thank you all for your great ideas. I have picked several items from many of your responses. I failed to include the fact that besides nautical I do earth stones like onyx, turquoise, moonstone, tigers eye etc.
I still need some catchy name that would tie them all together into a unique name.
