Naming A New Christian Church

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Hello everyone,

We are in the process of setting up (planting) a church in the Western Cape Province of South Africa (Yes, where the world cup is about to kick off LOL) Anyway, we have already decided that we will call our church the "Fusion" church, but was wondering what to "add" to this name...

We decided on the name "Fusion", because it says everything about our church: "): Webster Merriam Dictionary - “a union by a merging of diverse, distinct, or separate elements into a unified whole”.

But the question is this: Should we add something to the name?

E.g.

Fusion Life Church
Fusion Christian Church
Fusion Church
Fusion Family Church
Fusion Community Church
etc. etc. etc. - You get the picture...

We are a non denominational church and a completely new church, therefore we can add pretty much anything to this name. I am about to register the church as an organization in South Africa and require the official name, which I am hoping you will be able to give some advice about.

Please consider the fact that I will need to register a domain for a website and it will also need to "stick" with our members and be "catchy" enough for Joe Average to want to give our church a "go" :-)

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

God bless!

    Hi Karen,

    Thanks for the response.

I was quite to the point in my initial "question". All that you say I do know. I have done tons of research on "New Testament churches", church planting and I have also done a lot of research on the topic of "church planting". Not to mention the hours of prayers :-)

Anyway, I think the name "Fusion" will stick to our "audience", as our area consists of people from various cultures and we do plan to welcome everyone to our church.

I was simply wondering what people's perceptions are on the "suffixes" like, Christian Church, Community Church, Family Church, Congregational Church, etc. etc.

If you have some ideas on another name for the church, you are welcome to share them with us.

    Thanks again

    Thanks Phil and WMMA,

Your replies are both excellent and something which I have thought about for some time now...

WMMA, thanks for the insight on the name. It is the second time today that someone has joked about "con-fusion" and I reckon that this "mock" of our name will be used in all sort of ways. Your comments, as well as that of Karen and Phil have indicated to me that I seriously need to reconsider the name "Fusion". It is a lovely name and 100% explains what we do, but as you all say "What will the public think of the name", "Will they identify with this name" "Will it create con-fusion".

I also feel the name "Community Church" will be more appropriate - as Phil said, it will indicate that "anyone" and "everyone" is welcome to this church. This is actually what I wanted the name "fusion" to say, but "Community Church" says it a whole lot better.

For our website, we can then register a .cc domain, as it will stand for "Community Church" (.cc)

    Thanks again
