Need A Name For A Small Business Marketing Firm

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hello! I would love any and all input on a business name!

I work as a consultant with new businesses and existing freelancers, entrepreneurs, and small business owners (average of 0-20 employees) to develop and execute their branding and marketing strategy. While I have clients from many industries my largest segment tends to be freelance photographers, graphic designers, and writers, and small businesses like coffee shops and local restaurants for example. Several years out I would like to have a few employees in house, right now I refer out to other freelancers that offer services that my clients need.

My goal with each client is grasp who they are and what their business goals are and then develop a workable plan for execution as many of them are incredible at what they do but have no idea how to brand themselves or bring in clients.

While I’m good at what I do I’m finding that I have absolutely no gift at coming up with names!

I would like a name that is relatively short and preferable ends in a strong consonant. Professional but not corporate sounding. Once of my big selling points is that I’m very eco-friendly (ie, marketing pieces are on recycled paper with eco-friendly inks, digital instead of printed records, we compost all paper waste, percentage of profit donated to different non-profits or charities every month, just a few examples) and while not necessarily a deal breaker a name that has an earth connection would be a positive.

While I love the sound I would like to stay away from marketing industry buzzwords like ‘integrate’ and ‘elevate’. One of my favorite names which is already in use is ‘Taproot’ to give you an example. A name that is easily spelled is also important. I would also be open to names that are more abstract.

Thank you so much for you time and I welcome any and all ideas!

Instead of telling us what you do and what you want and what you value, how about focusing on what important and unique benefit you provide to your clients? That's what we should be communicating in the name. It's the WIIFM for your ideal client.

I would also suggest you narrow the target audience somewhat. It's so much easier (and less expensive) to focus your effort on a small target, and get a large share of that target, than to try and reach everyone and end up with a small share. The focus can be one specific area of marketing, one geographic area, one industry, etc.

And don't waste your time/effort selling your eco-friendly views. If you really believe in it, just do it. Don't require that your clients agree with your priority for green. Same with looking for a name ending with a "strong consonant." Clients don't pick a consultant because their company name ends with a strong consonant.

Focus on getting a name that communicates a clear and important (and unique) benefit promise to your primary target audience.

@mdlugozima and @Jay Hamilton-Roth - Thanks so much for you ideas!

The rest of you...I appreciate your well meaning advice but seriously, read the topic I posted under - 'Taglines/Names'. I'm not asking for business advice and if I want your 2 cents I will ask for it. I've been in marketing for a long time, novice advice like 'easily spelled' and 'give the client what they want' is not what I asked for. I'm close to this project, that's why I've contacting other marketing professionals for ideas on names, not advice that I've been giving my own clients for years. I also reserve the right to have a preference in the type of name that I choose, I was just trying to give you an clear idea on what I'm looking for.

@PhilGrisolia=Results - I have almost 20 years experience in the field, a graduate degree, awards to my name, and an impressive client list. I don't care a hoot (to use your own words) for your less than professional condescending attitude. You're obviously out of touch with many current trends. I know my niche, I know what sells in my area. "Last name" Marketing Group. Seriously?
