Photography Business Looking For A Name/tagline.

Posted by Anonymous on 50 Points
I have a current Photography business "Photo Works", main customer base is sports photography. I have been doing business for over 10 years with this name. In the recent 8 months the business has become a full time business and I am marketing to more of the Family. Children and High School senior portraits. I love to shoot outdoors with the vivid colors, offering a fun, comfortable portrait experience. I want my clients to feel at ease when being photographed. Most all of my work has come from word of mouth marketing. I am considering a new name for the high end market and leaving Photo Works for the sports side of the business. All thoughts...did I give enough details. I live at the beach and alot of my work is done around the water.

    Hi Lora,

I recently had a wonderful experience with a photographer for my wedding, and cannot praise the benefits of a skilled and professional photographer enough.

If most of your business is word of mouth, and you do not have a strongly promoted and recognized brand in the market, then a name change is a valid consideration, if you want to create separate branding from the sports business.

Consider though, that you will likely need to plan to promote this new brand more than you have your existing, if you want to benefit from it. If you do not, then there is not really a strong need to do so in my opinion.

I strongly recommend, as a first step, searching the past forum postings on re-branding, and learn from the many perspectives provided there on the subject.

If, having done so, you decide to continue with the re-branding, let us know!

    Kind regards,

    Ryan

Ryan -thanks for the response. I am known in the area as Photo Works - however most refer to me by my name Lora Hudson. I did search the past forum before posting this question.

Last year I did a new business card with images on the front and reduced the business name to include my name larger...the response I got from customers..."I didn't know you did family pictures" or people would ask "Can you do my daughter's photos?" So I guess educating my client base is what I'm after in this quest.

I do want to create separate branding from the sports, I want to brand the sports side of the business and this would result in branding the portrait side of the business as well. I'm ready to get things rolling with a brand, but can not start until the name is complete and tag line.

So I'm interested in hearing other thoughts on the project.

    Thanks
    Lora Hudson

Since you've got 10 years invested in your current name - strengthen your tagline. For example: "From Action To Portraits" or "Capturing Great Moments In Your Life" or "Vibrant Images To Treasure".

    Jay -

I like the last one, the word "treasure" is something I have been tossing around with using a starfish and sand somehow in the logo design. I just have not been sure how it all blends with the name Photo Works and sports. I'm really trying to think the whole name/tagline through this time around, since back in the early 90's I just gave the company a name. My brother's company is Lawn Works, hence the name Photo Works.

Ok - Yesterday I spent some time with a few of my clients talking about the tagline/name. The result was to do away with my idea of the starfish and sand in the branding. They don't blend well with the name Photo Works. I think this forum has really helped me to get this project in the right direction. I want to keep the tagline geared to the target market (high school seniors, children and family's). When photographing HS seniors, I specialize in gearing the entire session all about them, whatever they're into, that's where and how I arrange the shoot. Same with families, I stage the session in an environment they are comfortable with and familiar settings.

I am still looking for input on a tagline based on my target market. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks
    Lora
