Catchy Name For Small Town Bakery

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am in the process of starting a bakery and I need a simple but catchy name. I am from a VERY small town....population of approximately 400. There is no bakery in this area so I am attempting to start one. I will be providing breads, cookies, cakes, buns and pies. I will be providing a delivery service. It will be a home-based business at first and if it succeeds I will be building my own place to bake from.

I am currently doing my business plan and need a name soon.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated:)

Why not simply "The MyTownName Bakery"?

I'm with Jay. You don't need a CATCHY name. You need to let people in your area know that there's a bakery in town. Use the name of your town, as Jay suggests. You're the only game in town.

    How about Jackie's Bakery? ;)

People will want to know there's a real person behind the bakery and you are the real person. It sounds cosy and it has personality and everyone will walk in and ask "So who's Jackie?" You may even have a cartoon or caricature drawn of yourself for a bit of fun. If it is a small town, in no time, everyone will know Jackie!

    Dear Jackie,

Catchy is not a selling strategy™

    It's as simple as that.

    Name: Jackie's Bakery. Done. Next?

You may think the 400 souls in your town want a bakery but
is there a demand? You see, sales are driven by demand and availability, not by want alone. Joe Schmoe might WANT to open a sports car dealership in the Arctic tundra, but unless there's a demand for what Joe's selling, Joe will swiftly find himself in trouble.

It's possible to create demand by doing market research and by giving away free samples of cake, pie, bread, and so on as loss leaders. Throw in coupons for discounts on future sales and you stimulate demand through anticipation: get people's taste buds working over time and mouths begin to water at the mere mention of the word "doughnuts".

So, when it comes to your name, scratch "catchy". It's not a selling tool and never has been. Do some market research and then sell people what they want, NOT what you have to sell. And Jackie? Good luck to you!

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. I liked both Krista's and Gary Bloomer's answers. They both gave me something to think about but also gave me valuable ideas to help me succeed in my business. I have done the market research and found there is definitely a demand in this area for a bakery and many people are supportive of it.

I like Krista's idea of keeping it simple and maybe using a cartoon on my advertising flyers and business cards. I also liked Gary Bloomer's idea of offering free samples and using coupons. Maybe when I open I will place a coupon on the flyer for the customer to use on their first purchase.

    Thanks again everyone!
