Tagline For A Diverse Type Animal Feed Store

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
PADDINGTONS SEED & FEED STORE needs a very unique tag line. The store is named after a rescue puppy at 3weeks old, I named him Paddington Bear. His store consists of these feed departments: Canine, Feline, Companion Animals (chickens, rabbits, etc.) Equine and a WildBird seed. We specialize in food nutrition for all of these species.....also carrying some accessories but not are main focus. What is special about our store...we do not sell animals but we have rescued a 1yr old lab, 5 older cats and because of our expertise in good nutrition, they are all looking good for our customers.
Can any one help us find a great line?

You certainly do have a novel approach to naming your business.

Question: WHY do you want a tagline? What do you expect it to do for you? Who is the tagline for? Where will it appear? What will be different once you have a tagline?

If you start with the objective, it will be much easier to figure out how to approach this.

You might also give some thought to who your target audience is. Where do they live? How are they different from their neighbors who are not in your target audience? What is their most important unmet need when it comes to their pets? Why is Paddington's the perfect solution for them?

Your description of the business is engaging, but it's all about YOU, not about the customers' needs. We need to figure out why a customer might want to buy from you instead of a competitor. Any ideas?

Thank you for your responses, I have gone thru some of you questions. As for looking for a tagline, the store is a member of the BNI program, which suggests that a tagline helps people remember your business name ( right or wrong?) My goal is for the customer (animal owenr) to make PADDINGTONS SEED & FEED their only place for healthy, nutritional feed and realize they save alot more money by feeding healthy.
Our target audience....animal owners of varies age groups....30 miles radius is a blue collar, farming community.....competion is 4 other pet stores, fleet farm, wal mart and grocery stores.

You wrote: "As for looking for a tagline, the store is a member of the BNI program, which suggests that a tagline helps people remember your business name ( right or wrong?)"

    Comments/responses:

    1. What is a BNI program? Does BNI have a tagline? Does it help anyone remember their name? (Rhetorical question. Obviously not.)

    2. The reason a tagline won't help people remember the Paddington name is that the name doesn't mean anything that's relevant to the target audience. "Paddington" is a borrowed name (from the book), and is meaningful to YOU, but not to your target audience.

    3. In a perfect world, the name and the tagline work together to tell customers what you do and why they should buy from you. The name/tagline expresses an important and unique positioning benefit. "Paddington" isn't a benefit, so making it more memorable is a waste of time and money.

    4. Your positioning benefit needs some work. You might think you are "the only place for healthy, nutritional feed," but you're wrong. There are other options. And saving money is not a benefit; it's a feature. You might want to review the criteria for a good positioning statement. One of them is that it must be accurate. Another is that it must capture and respond to a legitimate benefit as perceived by the target audience.

It's probably worth the time and effort for you to really figure out why people buy from you. Maybe you could interview a few loyal customers and get them to tell you why they buy from you and not from one of the competitors. Better still, get a professional to conduct the interviews so you don't put your customers in the awkward position of having to tell you about yourself.
