How about playing off the view that pets are part of the family? I don't have an idea of what that would be but I would think speaking to that would be very effective.

Look at the Three Dog Bakery site (threedog.com). They totally play into pets as family. And it's a fun site, too.

The magazine Bark might also be inspiring (thebark.com). The pub refers to itself as all about modern dog culture.
