Need Name For Handmade Baby Items Business

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am starting a business centered around handmade baby items. Mainly I will be making diaper cakes, but am planning on expanding to bows, headbands, dresses, onesies, quilts, etc. Everything will be baby related. I need something catchy and modern. Not cheesy, something that would be considered classy and boutique worthy. The name does not need to reflect the items I'm selling, as I may just tack on "bakery" or "boutique" to the end. I might use a bird, owl, ladybug, pea, or polka dot in the logo, so keep that in mind. Some words I like so far include: Sweet Pea, Little Stork, Periwinkle, Avenue, and June Bug.

So who are your customers? Where do they live? How do they learn about businesses like yours? How do they make purchase decisions in this category? Where are they shopping for this stuff now?

What unique and important benefit do you offer that sets you apart from your competitors, or are you just a "me too" business counting on a local presence? If the latter, WHERE?

Why wouldn't you just use one of the words/phrases you have identified?

Customers would be anyone shopping for a baby, predominately women looking for unique baby shower gifts. At this point in time I am only using word of mouth for advertising, but hope to get a website and Facebook page as soon as I get the name figured out.

As I am just getting off the ground, I don't have set pricing. I am only taking custom orders and can give a price range based on what the customer is looking for. If they have a target price, I can tailor the order to that amount.

The main benefit about what I do is that it can be completely customized to create a one of a kind gift. And in the case of the diaper cakes, it is a way to present common, useful items in a unique and fun manner.

In regards to the words/phrases I listed, nothing seems to pop out yet. I am looking for outside input as to creative ways to include some of those words, or to go in a completely different direction. I'm open to suggestions!

Have you actually interviewed people in your target audience to see what goes through their minds when it comes to buying baby gifts? If not, that's where you need to start.

Create a simple discussion guide that has 6-7 high-gain questions and actually sit down and get your subjects talking about the subject. Don't lead them or try to sell them anything. Just ask your questions and listen.

Take good notes too. Capture the words they use and the emotions they describe -- positive and negative.

After you've finished 10-12 good interviews, step back and review all your notes. You'll find several great ideas we can use for coming up with a name for your business.

BTW, you'll also learn a lot about how to market to your target audience as a result of this exercise. Don't assume that you understand how your target audience thinks until you've engaged them in the discussion. (That's a mistake a lot of new entrepreneurs make.)

I like your suggestions very much. Do you have specific questions in mind you think would be most beneficial? I guess I feel I have a firm grasp on what women are interested in and looking for when it comes to baby related items since I'm included in my target audience.

On a different note, if I wanted to take some classes to help further my entrepreneur endeavor, what would you suggest?

Thank you for all the help so far! :)
