Name Needed

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I need help coming up with a name for my new company. I will be selling custom gift baskets and all items in the baskets can be purchased individually. Everything is handmade and made with natural products. A majority of the items are candles, bath products, lotions and baked goods. Eventually I would also like to sell custom invitations. If possible I would love to have my name, Caress, incorporated in the name.

OK. So who is going to buy these gift baskets? Where? How will they learn about your company? What is the most important benefit you offer your customers? Why should they buy from you instead of buying from one of the hundreds of other gift basket sellers?

Is this going to be an online business or a bricks-and-mortar retail store? Do you have business and marketing plans? If so, perhaps you can share some key information from those plans with us, so we know more about your target audience and positioning benefit.

Once we have this information we'll be able to come up with a great name for your company. Without the information we're really just shooting in the dark.

As for what you want (in the business name), it's probably less important than coming up with a name that will resonate with your target audience. After all, Caress only means something special to you (and those who know you). To your future customers the double-meaning will be totally lost.

I'm not saying that "Caress" is necessarily a bad name, but only if the business positioning is related to the meaning of the word "caress."

And finally, the "baked goods" seems like a bit of a departure from the other items you mention -- candles, bath products and lotions. Somehow edible products really change the character of the business. You're better off sticking to a single category -- for clear communication of who you are and what benefit you deliver.

There's a lot you can do with the name (CaressUBaskets) but a clever name doesn't guarantee the business.

I have a client who does this so it's difficult to offer anything substantial. I CAN tell you that she has become very successful by targeting a specific market and abandoning her original plan of doing everything.
