Glbt Film Review And History Site Needs New Name

Posted by jeepzia on 500 Points
I am reviving and updating a film review site targeted to lesbians and queer women (bi/ trans / etc). The site has been around since 2005, but it needs a face lift and new energy.

While reviews are the meat of the site, part of the focus is to chronicle how lesbians and queer women are/ have been portrayed on screen (and why). This covers positive and negative portrayals, and films from Edison to today.

Right now there is no real name -- just "lesbian films." The site has a very strong search engine presence using that term. It would be nice to not take a big hit on that.

Owners want the name to reflect the new energy and encourage younger visitors (who may not call themselves" lesbian"). The name should also let folks know the site offers more than reviews (a substantial film database, film news, essays and a community of fans and filmmakers).

Thanks for your ideas.

While not every lesbian would call themselves a lesbian or butch or any of the other common terms, they will still know what the site is about when you use one of those terms. So "Lesbian Films" is not necessarily a bad name. Says right off the bat who/what you are.

Hate to say it, particularly with me living in San Francisco, but I am not up on the current appropriate terms for lesbians, but you could consider substituting lesbian for other terms (dyke, etc.) that are accepted for lesbian. But choosing one that is a bit ore edgy than lesbian may be useful.

Or if you have thoughts of expanding the site beyond lesbian to all gay or GLBT, you could choose a term that is more broad, like GLBT or queer.

One other thought would be to take a play on IMDb.com. Maybe use LesianMDb.com? Challenge would be to make sure you don't conflict on the trade name for IMDb.com, but truthfully their trade name is not that strong (being that is uses commonly used terms "Internet Movie Database") and it is very unlikely that people would confuse LesbianMDb with IMDb. But you and your client would have to decide how much risk you want to take on this.

If people who are looking for you can easily find you now, I'm not sure why you'd want to mess with a good thing. Modernize your website, definitely. Instead of a new name, perhaps a new tagline might be in order. For example:

    Women Loving Women Loving Movies
Women HEART Women HEART Movies (where HEART is HTML heart character ♥)
    The Women4Women Movie Community
