Business Name

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am changing my business name, Young's Tax Service Plus. I am looking for a name that is more professional, modern and fresh. We provide bookkeeping, payroll, and individual/small business tax service. I have recently been certified as a QuickBooks ProAdvisor, but cannot use QuickBooks in the company name.

Thank you for your ideas.

Thank you for the input. My business is in a town called Zelienople. Many people shorten it to Zelie and I had thought about using that in my name, ie) Zelie bookkeeping solutions. I am concerned that shortening to Zelie borders on the cutesie side and I also do not want a long name. Do you think Zelie "xxxxxxxx" would be too cutesie? The geographical area is north Pittsburgh. Again any name with Pgh is going to be long.

My standard naming suggestion is to go to the Google Keyword tool and see what search terms are being used most often for your services. Let us say these included "bookkeeping, Pittsburg" and "accounting, Zelie." Register the associated domain names and look into how important sub-domains are for SEO (search engine optimization).

That is the computer/Internet/SEO friendly part of your name. Now you need to add a human friendly part to it, some humor or charm. You want to make the name catchier, easier to remember - for your customers. Therefore I like using Zelie in your name.

However what I like, and even what you like, is not particularly relevant. What counts is what your customers like. Consider a naming contest on social media. Or run a contest with your existing customers using survey software such as www.surveymonkey.com. Be sure to involve the local press.

The issue of re-naming your company as part of writing a case study could be an interesting project for a marketing class. Think of getting in touch with a marketing professor at the University of Pittsburgh or the Universty of Carnigie Mellon, both with fine MBA programs.
