Please Help Name My Cake Business!

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Hi,

I'm going to be setting up a small business, baking and decorating cakes/cupcakes/muffins etc from home, and delivering them. However, I'm having trouble thinking up a name!!
I don't want anything "gimmicky" as most of the cakes will be fairly simple or elegant. I'd like a name that reflects that.
I was thinking about naming for the area I live in, but if it takes off and I am able to open a proper shop it probably won't be in the same area (there are few shops here) so may well sound daft. Also I don't live in a "posh" area, and if I opened a shop in a nicer area of town it may put people off!!

Please help!!

    Dear Becka,

"I'm going to be setting up a small business, baking and decorating cakes/cupcakes/muffins etc from home, and delivering them."

    STOP.

Sorry to rain on your parade but unless you live somewhere where there are no local health and hygiene rules and laws to abide by, you'll need the proper permits and certifications to allow you to trade legally.

To do what you plan on doing you need to be a registered food vendor and you need food preparation spaces that meet and abide by local health regulations, even if you're based at home.

Don't skimp on this because if someone becomes ill
from some form of food-borne infection that's ultimately traced back to your (unlicensed) food preparation facility, you'll be in serious trouble.

Ideally, and in many states or regions, you'll need commercial grade kitchens and food preparation spaces.

So, if you're in the UK or the USA, track down your local food and health department and make sure you secure the proper certifications and permissions BEFORE you do anything else, which includes coming up with a name.

    Thanks for the responses everyone!

To Gary Bloomer - I've already done all this, but thanks for your concern. My family have been in catering before, so I'm fully aware of all the regulations.

I'm quite liking The Cake House, so much thanks to mark for that one!
