It is a fact to those internal to the company who totally believe it, but only to a proposition to potential customers who have all too often been sold on vapor ware (products that were hyped up to solve all sorts of problems, but in the end could not).

I think the terms fits well, its your proposition to your market in the value they can expect to get from you!

I agree with Peter that businesses do not often use or choose a correct value proposition, for their market or business, and just choose it from think air rather than loking at the market requirements then looking at competitor strengths!

Sanjay is right, it's textbook marketing jargon. Don't get hung up on semantics.

To the buyer, it's WIIFM: What's In It For Me?

To the seller, it's the promise, the claim, the differentiator.

The important thing is to make it meaningful to the folks you're trying to attract.
