Selling Hot Dogs That Won't Kill You

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am opening a haute dog stand that sells 100% grass fed beef/sustainable pig/turkey no hormones no antibiotics no nitrites no natrates added. No junk! The good ole American staple hot dog that won't kill you. I don't want that for my tagline. Thank you. I'm from Miami so I wanted a spanglish flair. I am puerto rican so I'm thinking of Perro Rico but didn't want to identify solely with my roots. My mom says that might be offensive to other cultures. I thought of "From farm to Frank" but not sure how that ties in with Perro Rico. I have ideas of making the stand look like a little red barn and a cowboy hat for uniform :) Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you...

(Aside: now that you've picked a high-level product, make sure that your bun and condiments are likewise high-level organic, bad-ingredient free.)

"Perro Rico" sounds more like "Rich Dog" to my ears, which might mean you're selling dog products, instead of hot dogs. Another business name idea to consider, for example: Caliente Dog or Perro Caliente.

As for a tagline, how about "Delicious & Sustainable" or "Mmmmm...Grass Fed!"

I look at your initial question and see possible names right there:

    Name: Haute Dog
Tagline: 100% grass fed beef/sustainable pig/turkey no hormones no antibiotics no nitrites no natrates added

Truthfully, I think the tagline is more important than the name. Perro Rico would work fine, so long as you have a tagline that describes the quality dogs you are selling.

I'm guessing that most people who buy hot dogs want a delicious treat. They want to indulge themselves in a so-called American classic. People don't buy hot dogs because they're pursuing an "all natural" diet. They buy 'em because they are a delicious indulgence.

If I'm right, the all-natural positioning won't be compelling enough to get them. I'd go with something like "The All-American Hot Dog Emporium" or "Most Delicious Dogs." If you think the Puerto Rican connection is important, you can even go with "Pedro's Perfect Hot Dogs" (etc.).

There's a lot of evidence across different food categories that "all natural" is more limiting than helpful. I'd stick with the main reason people want hot dogs, and then explain at the point of sale that "these are no ordinary hot dogs."
