Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am working on launching a new product. Product is produced, packaged and ready to go but we need a solid name. Any help on branding exercises that we can use to come up with a solid name?

    1) Describe what it is,unless the product is so well-recognized, you simply need a creative name.

    2) Cater to your customers

    3) Short is good.

    4) Make it memorable

I absolutely with Monmark Group...hire an outside source to develop your brand. The firm will definitely see your product differently than you do, bringing in an outside perspective (that of a customer) and the firm will not have the emotional attachment you have to your product, which will cloud your branding decisions.

We do projects like this all the time. Most clients don't really understand how important this decision is, and they are not prepared to spend the money to do it right. So what happens is they save the money, do it themselves, and realize at the eleventh hour that it's all wrong.

Then they call us in to "save the day," and there's no time to do it right or we'll miss some deadline they've set for themselves. It hurts to turn the client away, but it hurts worse to do a sub-optimal job because there's no time to do it right.

So, self-serving as it sounds, Randall's advice is right -- and it's more important than you probably realize right now. Unfortunately, it also looks like it might be too late for you. If the product is already produced and packaged, you may need to compromise the marketing effort when it comes to your branding strategy.

Here's a way out: We can assess the situation from an objective point of view and let you know if we believe, based on years of experience in branding, we (or anyone else) can create the brand image you want. It will cost you a lot less than actually creating the brand -- especially if it's based on a sub-optimal positioning.

(The marketing plan, including the brand positioning, should come BEFORE the product is produced and packaged, not after.)
