Question

Topic: Taglines/Names

Name/branding: Pattern, Design Influenced Startup

Posted by stephanie.hale on 500 Points
Hi everyone

Please help

I am using the vibrant and creative influences of African patterns (think Kaleidoscopic patterns) in various ways for my start up.

The products will include wrapping paper, cushions etc . The feel I am looking to evoke when someone picks up the product / print is one of style, creativity, innovation, inspiration, intrigue and fascination.

These products and designs will be high end housewares products. Please advice on a suitable name that is young, fresh and quirky.

I don't want Africa to be included in the name as I would like the brand to be all inclusive.

Thanks in advance for your HELP

I'm sure you've thought of this already... but the swahili word for home is NUMBANI

considering your houswares product line, and your african inspiration... it may be a good fit.

So who is your target audience? Where/how will they learn of your existence? Where do they live? Are you a manufacturer, retailer, both/other? Online or bricks-and-mortar?

We need more information if we are to be helpful.

Thank you so much for all your responses.

Answer 1: Thank you, NUMBANI sounds gorgeous

Answer 2: Apologies if i didn't make it clear. I may want to widen the brand and design concepts in time to come (perhaps include aborigine patterns etc). In a nutshell I am half African (hence my love for the patterns) and half English (hence my love for contemporary design).

I want to offer something different by selling contemporary products for a design led end user (that's the focus). Thus, creating a brand where an African person can relate to but also the design focused end user without having to explicitly mention 'geography'.

Answer 3: The product will be manufactured according to speck and distributed by myself initially. I also aim to create an e-commerce website. My aim is to develop the brand online initially through grassroots marketing. In time to come I would like to widen my distribution channels.

Price wise the mark up is at the top end. I am seeking help on a name and tagline that fits my vision.

    Thanks in advance

Regarding "In a nutshell I am half African (hence my love for the patterns) and half English (hence my love for contemporary design)".

So maybe you could combine an English surname with an african surname, for example using your english name:

    Kaforhale World Designs
    Dokuhale World Designs
    Halekalu World Designs
    Haloko World Designs

You might explore other surnames such as Smith (KaforSmith), Taylor, Wright etc. Also, "World Designs" takes specific geography out of the equation, but there are many other options.
