Modifying Our Business Name

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
So we are thinking we need to tweak our business name. Currently it is "WolfBrook Dog Club & Park". We are about to expand our training offerings. From one on one consults to now doing a slate of group classes. We want to shift the focus of the business to the training (that has always been our bailiwick). We will continue to offer the daycare, boarding and private off-leash park. We have always felt the name was kind of vague and cumbersome but knew we wanted to include all aspects. Since most people don't really know what a "dog club" is, then we were forever explaining the membership system, etc.
We think we will just change it to "WolfBrook Dog Training Club". We will still show the boarding/daycare and park on the website as services but don't want it to be part of the title. Thoughts?
Oh, here is a link to show the logo as it is, and how it will look if we change it.
Of course if anyone has a better way to describe us in the name I'd be happy to hear that as well.

What do your members think about the old name / proposed name change?

Why not change the name to "WolfBrook" and introduce a tagline that can change over time (if necessary) to describe what you offer. For example:

    WolfBrook
    Dog Training & Socializing

The members don't really care. They just refer to us as WB on their Facebook posts. As long as they get a tshirt with the new name they will be happy :D. Our web guru guy was telling us that it would help with the searches if our name had "training" in it since that is what most people search on. We are getting our butts kicked by another training place nearby that doesn't have nearly the experience but does have a great marketing person (the owner).
I have been trying to come up with a tagline we like since day one but can't seem to hit on it so have just done without.

If the members don't care, and your underlying goal is to beat your competition - then I'd suggest you focus your message on "Why Wolfbrook?" Who would be a better fit for your club? Why? What do you offer that the other guy doesn't/can't? If you're not sure "Why You", then ask your members why they joined & why they're still members.

As an Agility Dog Guy I'm jealous of all you offer!

Getting that into a Tagline (as Jay suggests) could be the answer...in fact perhaps too many areas to Brand you as the Go to Place for all dog education..maybe a collective and enticing phrase could work at making you Unique.

If your Comp. has a direct tagline then try emotive or touchy feely If they suggest quick results mention your thoroughness etc.

A twist on conventional-Dog: thinking also makes your tagline stickier-

No Bad Masters - The WolfBrook Way

    WolfBrook
Building 6-Packs of Canine Mental Muscle

    Wish you were here, GoodlLuck.

Sorry all, I have tried and tried to find this question in the forums but it doesn't show up under open questions. I finally had to go back in history and find my original posting in order to read the responses.
So I guess my question is if I want to put my "new" name on a tshirt, a business card or at the top of my website, WolfBrook by itself is very vague. So I guess in that case, I would HAVE to come up with a tagline like those suggested here, correct?

Yes. You need to come up with a tagline that clearly tells your target audience what you do and/or what benefit you provide.

Your best bet for this might be to hire a professional with the right kind of experience to do this for you. It shouldn't take more than a few days to develop an initial list, and another few days to finalize it. The key, of course, will be to define the objective very clearly, and to provide a crisp Creative Brief up-front, so there's no excuse for an off-strategy tagline submission.

Thanks! I'd love to hire someone but found the few I called weren't interested in working for such a small company. Is there a good resource I could look into?

I am in Milton, Georgia. Just north of Atlanta.

Resource: Your best bet would be a naming/tagline specialist. Second choice: a great copywriter who has done this before. (If you use a copywriter, YOU will have to prepare a tight creative brief so they don't have to figure out the marketing strategy as well.)

It would be great if we could find someone who is qualified in/near Atlanta, but perhaps this can be done almost as well via phone/email. Contact me offline if you want a few referrals you can try. Use the email address in my profile.
