Bookkeeping/tax Prep Business Name

Posted by stacy.jean on 250 Points
Hi all,

I am currently wanting to start a home-based bookkeeping/ tax prep business. My business would include payroll and other office manager type duties (human resource, marketing, office organization, research, basically everything but answering phones as I would primarily be virtual). My focus would be on small businesses that don't need a full time office person.

I will be taking my CPA exam this summer and do have my BS in Accounting. I also have about 5 years experience doing all of this.

I am trying to come up with a name that is professional and will encourage people to seek me out. When I look in the yellow pages, there are hundreds of people who use their names or something like "Better bookkeeping". My last name is rather difficult to say, so I am not sure I should use it.

I like the tagline "Managing your office, so you can manage your business" or something like that, but I am not sure if a tagline is a great idea.

Any ideas are appreciated, Thanks!!

Who specifically are you trying to target? What region? Comparing yourself with your competition - what would/could you offer that they don't (that would matter to prospective clients)? A name (and/or tagline) by itself won't make people suddenly seek you out. Remember it's your service that people will remember.

Following up on Jay's good questions, I think you need to pin down the right words that label your best niche segment. For example; virtual office manager, virtual accounting dept., virtual CPA etc. Then google these terms to get a sense of what the competition is doing and who they are targeting (by title, by industry, by location etc)

    ex. virtual office manager

    ex. virtual accounting department

FWIW, I would hardly call Marketing an "office manager type duty." With that kind of thinking maybe you can be the CEO too.

As for a name for your business, you need to think about the BENEFIT for your target audience. If you can express that in the name of your business, you may not need a tagline ... or your tagline can really extend the benefit to an emotional payoff for your clients.

Okay, so you're starting. You have a good idea of what you can do for your customers too. Now you can get clever and start imagining them! Quite literally, imagine your best ever customer - down to their shoe size and what they do at weekends. Because your business isn't other businesses despite the fact that you are doing the things that millions of other businesses do. "Its not what you do, it's the way that you do it" as the old adage goes.

So discover the way you do things first by imagining your best customer. Because you will have a lot of commonality with them. When you do get customers you can hone your ideas better.

In short, we need to know why your customers would choose you instead of a dozen others offering "all that boring office stuff". You are entering a crowded market. Defining your niche will make you stand out clearly - to those people who like *you*. They will be less worried about price because the things you do for them will mean 10-100x what they pay you - either in increased profits or that they get time to do their job and not one that annoys them - or worse, bores them. (All this can go into your imaginary customer!)

Be warned: if any client wants you to be cheaper - look at their character very, very carefully. What is it about them that they don't respect you? What is it about them that they don't want to invest in their own business? This kind of client isn't gracious nor are they thankful. They will whinge and complain about the hard work you did for them. So when someone wants you to be cheaper, be firm. Your profitability depends on it. When I dismissed our bad clients from our business in the UK, our profits that year leaped. What's more it was for less work.

In the meantime let's have a go at some names and taglines. The fun bit!

Stacy's Office Services*. A helping hand for all those boring jobs you hate. (*SOS!!)
Giving you the freedom from boring jobs.
Freedom from boring jobs, so you can do yours.
SOS - when you're sinking under paperwork, I'll rescue you!
Drowning in the office paperwork? I have the lifeboat

Now that was fun! What do you think? M xx
