Good Name For Fitness Marketplace.

Posted by carl.nolet on 250 Points
Hello guys,

This is the first question I post on this site so I'll try to give you as much detail as possible - I'll also try to keep it short, don't worry.

I'd need your help to find a good company name. Ideally, the ".com" domain name should be available but other domain names could also be available if it's creative (ex. About.me, Acquis.io, Love.ly). The name should sound good (easy to pronounce) and look good (e.g. no double "t"). Ideally, it should have less than 3 syllables (2 is the magic number). Let's try to find something fun and fresh.

Here are a few names I adore: SkillShare, StyleSeat, FreshBooks, CrowdBase, FitBit, GetAround, FourSquare, SendGrid, MailChimp (you get it!).

So, regarding our business. Here's some more info:

High-concept pitch:
OpenTable for Fitness

Elevator pitch:
A platform that allows fitness professionals to run, promote and grow their business, everything in one place.

In a nutshell:
Think the only place fitness professionals will ever need to live online. Smart, simple yet powerful tools to allow them to run their entire business. Customizable website templates to give them the visibility they need and let them showcase their products. Online scheduling, booking and CRM options to simplify the interaction with their clients. Analytics, daily deals and email marketing tools to let them build word of mouth and grow their business. Each page has substance; if it doesn't, we kill it. We are the place where fitness goes to grow. Our company works because its foundation is based on people and places that already exist within a city. We are simply giving them the tools they need to market themselves, manage their business and communicate explicitly with the people who want to hear everything they have to say.

Competitors (let's try to find a different name): SweatGuru, Fitchek, Wello, CoachUp, MindBodyOnline, ZenPlanner, GoRecess, Classtivity, GenBook...

Alright, that's about it. Thanks a gazillion times in advance for your help. I've been searching for a good name for months but couldn't find anything that wowed me.

Let me know if you have any question.

Best,
Carl

    Hello guys,

    Thanks for your help.

@ Steve Byrne - The ".com" extensions of the names you suggested are not available. I'm looking for a name with an available ".com" extension.

@ Jay Hamilton-Roth - Ideally I'm looking for 2 evocative words together. Think of Skillshare, a marketplace where people share their skills or StyleSeat, a website where you you can book seats with stylists. See what I mean?

@ AA/Swap - I like the idea or "buddy" but I'm looking for something without any dashes. I know, it's hard.

@ grantwilliamfinlay - I like the idea but the spelling is confusing ("s" vs. "c"). The name should be easy to pronounce and write and not be ambiguous.

Any other ideas guys, I need your help! ;)

It looks to me like Zenplanner is the only direct competitor (on a very brief scan). However, before I continue, what is it that YOU can offer your customers that the others can't. I don't need an answer yet, it is however something to look into with some seriousness. Because realizing a chink in the opposition's armor means you can establish a niche for yourself. Finding the people who need that service will then make establishing your software and website much easier.

I'm thinking of the younger guys who are wanting to manage their coaching businesses online. An app would be a useful addition to your armory too, if you hadn't already thought of it. Most of these guys will be using their phones as portable planners.

PlanzPro.com is available and has that "edge" to it.
TheMuscle.biz is available*, the .com is taken.
    Coachapp.biz is also available.

(*Only, we are talking to businessmen, not the general public. A .biz name could be an asset here, put you into the "business" sector rather than the ordinary public. What are your ideas on this aspect? To me it gives your name a little more direction. Plus there are way more names available!).

    What do you think?

@ Moriarty - Thanks for your time.

Put simply, ZenPlanner is more of an all-in-one management tool for the fitness industry while we're trying to be more like about.me / Wix for fitness. First, we want to help them to create their own page/profile and help them get more visibility through some kind of marketplace (see 42Floors.com). Only after that will we focus our efforts on the booking / CRM features. We don't want to play the features game. MindBody does it very well for large studios.

You're right when you say that we should focus the younger guys, those who got just their certifications or opened their studio and can't afford to pay $70+ per month. A mobile app is also on its way. As you said, most of these guys need something that they can bring with them everywhere.

I'm really looking for a .com domain name (even if I have to pay 2-3k for it) or a meaningful .ly, .co or .me domain name (think about.me). The name should not be ambiguous (ex. Planz - the "z" is confusing). Ideally, something like StyleSeat or Skillshare (e.g. a marketplace where people SHARE SKILLS, a place where people can book a SEAT with a STYList).

Maybe something with "fit" or "active"?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

In my experience, Carl, you're probably best off hiring a naming expert to develop a creative brief and from that suggest names/URLs. What you're asking for in your posting requires more depth of research than is done by the experts on this site. I've done this for many clients, but you might simply take a look at the profiles of the top naming experts (in right column) to see if someone specifically appeals to your needs (and contact them directly).

I agree with Jay. The experts on this site will typically have a time proven process that will produce excellent marketing solutions for a client's needs. BUT, any such process will begin with a very comprehensive creative brief input session, along with ongoing dialogue to further refine the project criteria and keep it on course. For example, we now know you don't really want a name such as "MailChimp" and you're willing to pay "2-3k" for the right name if it is registered by others. All such information would be clear upfront when hiring an expert.

@ Jay & Steve. Makes sense, I'll try to contact someone directly. Thanks for your comments ;)
