Innovative Name For Football League

Posted by honeypurushothaman on 125 Points
Hi, I am working with a sports company and we are planning to launch a Football league. We want to attract maximum people to come and play with us.
For that we need a very innovative name for the League. Which would attract attention. This league is inviting anybody above 18 to play. Some out of the box names for a football league.
Any ideas would be really appreciated.

I was confused when I first saw this and thought of a whole new football league. Following what Charan has said, this is a name for a team?

I'll assume so for the moment.

    [Your local town] Tigers
    [Your local town] Kickers!
The Thursday Evening just for fun football team
    Football is fun!

    Your thoughts?

We need something different... like Skyros United sounds different but then it wudnt attract footballs attention much because most of them may not know that it is derived from Episkyros.
I really appreciate the help. Something a bit more different and not very casual would be a lot more helpful.

These are great. but these are team names. We need to our League. It may not fit the requirement! :(

Are there any teams in your league? Where are you based? Why would a club want to join your league?

We are inviting teams from all over Bangalore to play with us.. the prizes are quite huge for winners. And we are hoping teams would come to play. That is why we want innovative names to attract them.

It looks like there is an existing "Bangalore Football League" with FOUR divisions. Why does Bangalore need an additional league? Are there any other separate Bangalore football leagues? What problem would you solve by creating your additional league? How would you be positioned relative to ALL other leagues in the area? Who are you targeting players/fans/sponsors?

The answers to these questions will help drive the best relevant name choice.

Steve Byrne is correct, however, you will know of Kerry Packer. Need I say more?

If your idea is radical enough - and that is really taking it outside the box in a meaningful way - it will stick. All this is to complement what Steve says; the point I am trying to make is that we need to know what your concept is. In this quiet corner of the internet, your opposition isn't that likely to be looking (they will as soon as you publicize it - then it doesn't matter, does it?). The point is that nobody is expecting your idea, and out of the box thinking has this tremendous advantage of being totally unexpected. When your opposition say "well of course we knew" you know that they're only saving face.

Armed with this knowledge we can wring our communal minds and come up with some really out of the box ideas for taglines - and probably a few strategies too.

BTW - it's always great to get the author's feedback. It's appreciated as usually we fire off ideas into the dark.

The already operating leagues are not very well managed. Plus there are complaints about the facilities. We have the best facilities in the town. Our research team has done the research and suggested us to go for a football league as they believe we would have and edge over the other leagues. Also people are willing to play for more than one league. We wud operate atdifferent times of the year.
we do not really have a radical idea as such. We are targeting only the players. We have corporate tie ups with a lot of firms for sponsorship. But we want to attarct the maximum crowd to play. And we are looking at only social media marketing. Hence the need for innovative names soa s to attract the attention.

Good morning. You say something important: "We are targeting only the players." - are these the DECISION MAKERS for their team? It's fine speaking to them, the point is do they have a choice? Who is the captain, the coach and the manager of these teams? Getting to them surely is way more important.

The other side of this coin is are these teams' decision makers listening to their complaints about the facilities? Some managers are fearful that the extra cost will endanger the team - yet ignoring their members will also endanger the team (the players will go elsewhere!).

When you say "social media marketing" are we talking paid advertising, or just tweets and Facebook likes? If you have a small budget, the Google Display Network is excellent for reaching out to target audiences.

Another thought: if you research team have done good work, you would be saying more than "we believe" you would say something like "these teams are the ones who will move over to our league, so target them".

Finally - you speak of "attracting the maximum crowd to play" what about the audience, the paying viewers? How will you attract them? [Understand that comments are small places and misunderstandings are rife! Nevertheless, it's a valid point.]

As to innovative names, they need to catch your audience's attention. Just being funny or witty will only look silly. It needs to catch their eye, not make them laugh and move on. Your target audience are the people to tell you - again this is easily done through the display network.

Okay, now you're in Bangalore which won't give you much time. I'll give it another go.

The Multicolour League (thinking Kerry Packer! Do you remember him?)
    Rainbow League
    Bangalore's Best
    Be Bangalore!
    Bangalore Rainbow
    Rajas League
    Palace League (thinking quality)
Bangalore Palace League (does Bangalore have a palace - I guess a city of this size would have?)

Mix and match, add, take away - do what you like with them! I'm sure you might have ideas that come from these. Let me know what you think, give me your ideas and we can throw them around a little.

Thank you so much for your prompt response. I suggested the some of yours and some more. thanks again!
    Bangalore Strikers league
    Bangalore Strikers Cup
    Bangalore Football Coalition League
These were the suggestions that came up today.. though all got rejected.
They liked "Saturday Bull fighting" a bit which I fail to understand why.. :( It doesnt make much sense.
but the idea was to have something different.. We would have to present more names tomorrow.

When you say "they" is this the board or the customers of which we speak? Because if it's the board, be very, very careful. If it's your customers - take a very close look at what they like in the name. They are the ones you need to attract, not new board members - okay!

I'm around for the rest of the day. We can sort out a few names.
