Name For A Homelessness Action Week Event

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
Hey everyone —- hoping you wonderful experts can assist me with a great name for an event I am working on —- this forum has been amazing in creating awesome names for several of my past events.

This event is at our neighbourhood house to provide a hot meal and personal care kits (socks, toothbrushes, soap etc) to people who are homeless and at risk in our community. We will have a nurse practitioner offering care and advice, the library staff will be giving out books and library cards and there will be free haircuts and footcare. Our goal is to seek to show our community’s support and care to those who are marginalized in and by our society

Thanks
Christine

Is the goal of the event to attract people to use the services on this day, or to raise funds for such services, or attract local support to participate in providing services? Where is this event? When? What's the name of the neighborhood house (which I'm assuming provides some ongoing support for those in need)?

Jay has asked the right questions. Who are the target audiences and how will they learn about this event? What media, e.g. newspapers, flyers, posters, word of mouth, online etc.?

Jay and Steve -- you are making this far more complicated than it needs to be --

target audience is clearly those in need in our community -- those who are homeless and at risk
Yes, of course we would like to attract supporters and sponsors.
Event will happen in October as part of the City of Vancouver Homelessness Action Week

    Thanks
    Christine

Thank you Swapnil of AA Swap and Moriarty ---

feels like your concepts could percolate into something.... we want a name that is descriptive and has dignity. Last year the group called the event Homeless Connect --- while connect is good; the name lacked allure and dignity.

Hi Steve - thanks for your ideas -- I love the neighbours, comfort, care concepts and want to focus less on a name that might be perceived to put a barrier between 'us' and them' Caring for our homeless is great but I would like focus to be on caring for our neighbours (and less like us 'kind folks' helping out the 'unfortunate ones'.) Most of us are more alike than we think... sometimes only a paycheck away from needing social assistance or being homeless ourselves.

I am looking for a way to convey our love and care in solidarity with each other.

    Thanks

Yes, I understand what you are saying on a personal experience level. I was trying to work something out by using the concept of "neighbors without homes" instead of "homeless" to change the "us and them" perceptions. Neighbors are neighbors no matter where they sleep. So maybe "neighbor-to-neighbor caring" or something along these lines will work. Hope this helps.

May I add a thought here. Whilst it's laudable to help these people, you're only helping them for a *week*. That in itself implies an "us and them" situation. After the week's done - the shutters go down again for another year and they're left standing in the cold and wet.

What can be done in this instance that this week's helping can lead to 51 more of them when you're not actively pursuing this campaign?

I've been homeless several times in my life - and a combination of friends and my own energies, I got myself a job and a home. I could have sat around like the guys from the DDR sitting around the Schlosspark. That is a tale in its own right - only their education system didn't give them the imagination to do anything but expect to be helped.

Moriarity -- Thank you for your note and your willingness to share part of your story. I fully agree that this particular event is only for one week and would like you to know that the neighbourhood house of which I am part and the resource centre where I am a care advocate work all weeks of the year to support those who are at risk and in need in our community. And part of the grant funding for this Homelessness Action Week go to produce resource guides, purchase vouchers for community meals which we offer to those who are not able to afford them, as well as host this event. Part of the goal of the event is to invite people to the neighbourhood house, who might not otherwise come, and to let them know we are here year round to support them.

    Thanks
