Should Use My Existing Business Name?

Posted by sewatseams custom tailor on 25 Points
I am an owner of a custom tailoring and alterations business since 2007. I have a steady clientele and new customer regularly seeking my services for custom sewing, alterations work for clothing.

We are known for custom sewing, tailoring and alterations for clothing. I have a website advertising my professional services as well.

My passion for sewing extends beyond custom clothing. I have a passion for designing and creating handmade
textile wallhangings and I have designed and creating a collection of all purpose smock/aprons. I would like to sell my products on an Etsy marketplace.
I am not interested in an ecommerce website.

I'm on Facebook and LinkedIn, networking and promoting my current business/brand, Sew At Seams Custom Tailoring & Alterations.

My problem is how can I continue using my business/brand name, and let my customer's and prospective customer's know I love designing and creating accessories and textile wallhangings as well.

I'm hoping I can sell the smocks/aprons and wall hangings under the same business name. The wall hanging is called the DenimJeanWallpockets and the aprons name is Denim Pocket Smocks.
I will use the same name for my Etsy shop.

Please help,

Patricia

Do you know for a fact that current customers will be or are interested in your wall hangings?

If not, and if you know there are buyers for your wall hangings, start a separate website under the Etsy banner and go from there. By adding the wall hangings side of things to your existing business model you run the risk of diluting your current brand while also confusing your customers.

    Hi,
I agree when you say using the business name would confuse the customer.t.

I've received many compliments on the wall hangings from customers. Because they are my original designs I had the wall hanging copyrighted with the U.S. Patent Office and the application process took a long time to receive the certification. I would not sell them at that time ,now I would like to along with the smocks.

Any idea's on a name for this, shop may be of help. What do you think of naming the shop after the wall hanging or the smock/ apron name

I've already set up my etsy shop I just haven't decided on a name, I'm stuck in rut.

    Thanks,

    Patricia. .

I may not fully understand the issue. Why not name the business:

    Denim Jean Wallpockets

You can name the apron business:

    Denim Pocket Smocks

What is driving the desire to use the same name for both? Do they share a common target audience and deliver a shared benefit?

fabricwallpockets.com is available. It's also a keyword search phrase used on Etsy and other such sites. Try searching Etsy with "fabric wall pockets".
