Tagline/concept For A Clinical Psychologist

Posted by kristi on 125 Points
I have a Clinical Psychologist who wants me to design some things for his advertising. He wanted to have me use a guy on a surfboard, riding a wild wave, to represent and say: From Chaos of the storm into Order and Organization.

My first thought is confusion by a surfer on a psychologist ad. Instead I though I could talk him into using a different metaphor (i think that's the word). All I could think of was a soothing picture of a rocky beach, leading to smooth waters saying "You have to maneuver the rocks to get to the open water". Or a person standing in a dark dingy room, looking out the open door at a beautiful light filled world saying . . . I don't know what it would be saying. So I need help in coming up with some idea for an image along with a tagline that represents coming from a chaotic world into a world of calmness. Thanks for any thoughts - I am truly stuck!

It would help to know who specifically are his clients: age, gender, income levels, common issues, and region. Otherwise, all we'll be able to do is offer generic concepts, which wouldn't help their business. Also, why do they think a concept/tagline will do for their business?

Does the business have a name, or is it just his name? What's the objective of the tagline?

It's possible the graphic and tagline, plus the name of the business, would be "information overload."

If the name tells people that he's a clinical psychologist, maybe just a simple tagline like "Chaos to Calmness" would be enough. Telling a story in words and pictures may be a self-defeating endeavor. OK for an ad perhaps, but maybe not for a tagline.

You have good points. The name of the company is Redmond Therapy. He hasn't given me much to go on, but I gather he does relationship, marriage counseling. Here is his website (which I am redesigning), but it doesn't give too much additional info. https://redmondtherapy.com/default.aspx He is near Seattle Washington. The only reason I am looking for a tagline/concept idea is because that is what he wanted to have. He wanted to give his website a particular 'feel' as soon as you open the site, so a person right away gets what he does. In the end, if I don't feel comfortable with this conceptual idea, I will suggest a different avenue. For now I wanted to throw it out there to see if anyone had an idea that might 'click'. If not . . . I go on to step two. Thanks!

There seem to be two metaphors at play

Oil on troubled waters; Sun after rain; Smoothing out linen; Back to equilibrium

Taking control; Surf the wave; Riding wild horses; Ship/lighthouse in a storm; skier outrunning an avalanche

Both could work graphically, but the tagline and the imagery seem a bit mixed at the moment.

Your psychologist seems be pushing the concept of taming a primal force of nature...to control it, then to harness its power and enjoy the thrill of life.

If that's how he sees his line of work, maybe we can come up with a better representation of that than a surfer.
Or is he an avid surfer?

No, he isn't a surfer, and that is what i was hoping for, for someone to come up with a better representation of this idea he has. I am open to suggestions!

For a picture - how about a picture of a daisy or a butterfly with an umbrella over it during a storm.

I like the visual concept of a mirror.....Psychologists seek introspection, so the concept of what do you see when you look in the mirror vs. what would you prefer to see if you look in the mirror. You could then have someting about...."do you see a work in progress or a work of art?"

Or if it's in a dark room with a drab curtain pulled, the person can pull the curtain back to a beautiful sun-filled beach/garden scene...."open your eyes to the beauty of life"

In both scenarios, it gives more sense of how you can control those situations. You can't really control a storm, you just have to 'wait it out'....not the best mantra for people in difficult situations.
