Coffee & Networking Info Series For Autism Parents

Posted by plano on 250 Points
We provide intensive autism treatment for children and youth affected by autism spectrum disorders. We have a play-based, family-centered approach to treatment and believe deeply in engaging and equipping parents to be effective play and teaching partners to their children.

We plan to start a quarterly event for our families, to help them make supportive connections with one another. This would involve a Saturday morning session that includes coffee and good food, an information session (speaker or panel), and a networking/connecting activity, designed to get parents sharing their experiences with one another. While we are professionals, we want these events to feel less like a conference, more like a relaxed gathering, but still with a purpose and quality information.

We are looking for a name for this quarterly series.

Some key words and themes that come to mind are:
Family life; Wellness; Networking; Connections; Breakfast; Coffee; finding common ground; Fun; Support; Equip; Parent to parent; Enhance; Break; points of connection

It depends to some extent on the name of your organization/business. Does it clearly say what you do, or is it a "generic" name (like "ABC Associates")? If the target audience is strictly your current clients, and they know you well, then the name doesn't matter as much as the promised benefit. Are they seeking support, or information, or just socializing with other parents who are empathetic?

Have you asked the prospective attendees if this sounds like something they'd want? If yes, why? What words do they use to describe why they'd have some interest?

    My initial reaction/suggestion: Parent-to-Parent Exchange

These would just be current clients, so they already know who we are and what we do. We know that they are very interested in forming parent-to-parent connections because they often ask about forming a parent support group. In addition, during a recent information session we offered about a new service offering through our clinic, a few of the parents who met for that session have continued to get together -- so they formed their own impromptu group.

We know that other families would also like to form those kind of connections. Plus, we have rolling admissions, so there are always new families joining our clinic. It would be great to tell them "You should think about coming for a [Parent-to-Parent Exchange .. or whatever name we choose]. It's a great way to get connected!"

For a bit more casual naming:

    Parent Share Fair
    Know-More Meet-ups
    Parent Knowledge Spa

    plano, glad that helped.

I agree, if you're a busy parent with job and a child that needs a LOT of special attention, the last thing they want to perceive this as being a workshop or learning hour. If you package it as more of a fun and celebratory event (with some laughter and learning too), then they would enjoy a bit of a break.

You can theme it with something fun: spa, circus, getaway, fiesta, jam session, powwow.
